Equestrian Extravaganza Set For Switzerland And Germany

Top riders and exciting competitions headline the upcoming equestrian events across borders.

Upcoming equestrian events are gearing up to capture the attention of horse sport enthusiasts across Germany and Switzerland. Among the highlights is the prestigious Concours Hippique International (CHI) set to commence on January 9, 2025, at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland. This event promises not just thrilling competitions but also marks the first time Basel will host the World Cup finals, making it a pivotal moment for the equestrian community.

Thomas Straumann, Chairman of CHI Basel, outlines the excitement, stating, "Wir haben ein grosses Jahr vor uns," which translates to "We have a big year ahead of us." This year will not only feature several classical events but will also serve as the stage for top competitors vying for accolades and positions leading to the World Cup finals to be held in April 2025.

The CHI Basel will showcase three dressage competitions and seven jumping events, as well as amateur-level competitions running until January 12. The grand finale event, the World Cup jumping competition, is set for Sunday, January 12, at 14:15, where riders will aim to secure valuable points for their World Cup standings. With over a million Swiss Francs offered as prize money, including 330,000 Francs for the World Cup jumping event alone, the stakes are undeniably high.

Notable participants this year will include the Swedish top-ranked rider Henrik von Eckermann, who leads several top ten world-ranked jumpers. Along with fellow Olympians such as Ben Maher and Scott Brash, this competition promises to feature some of the best talent the equestrian world has to offer. Swiss stars are also prominently featured, including Olympic gold medalist Steve Guerdat and three-time European champion Martin Fuchs. Guerdat, ranked as the second-best rider globally, is eager to showcase his skills at home after past victories at this venue.

Meanwhile, the Agravis-Cup will take place concurrently from January 8-12, 2025, at Münster, Germany. This event includes both national dressage and jumping tournaments providing another exciting opportunity for national riders to compete. Participants hoping to make their mark include notable riders like Isabell Werth, who continues to be ranked as one of the top dressage riders globally.

Returning to the CHI Basel event, the excitement is amplified this year with various entertainment segments planned. Local Swiss artists such as R&B singer Seven and soul singer Stephanie Heinzmann will perform, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the competition. Fans can also look forward to the ceremonial retirement of the illustrious dressage horse, TSF Dalera, known for clinching double gold with rider Jessica von Bredow-Werndl at the Olympic Games.

The event lineup is poised to draw comparisons to Basel's recent award for hosting the Eurovision Song Contest, raising curiosity about venue scheduling. Reported by Thomas Kastl, Director of the St. Jakobshalle, he expressed confidence about the timely setup for both significant events, ensuring the CHI Basel will transition seamlessly to the preparations for Eurovision.

Following CHI Basel, participants still have numerous opportunities to gain World Cup points with additional competitions planned throughout January. This successful string of events is bolstered by substantial local support and the avidity of equestrian fans. The organizers anticipate crowds similar to previous events, ensuring another thrilling chapter for horse sports enthusiasts. Last year's events saw approximately 21,000 attendees flourish at the St. Jakobshalle, demonstrating the continuing high interest.

With many high-profile competitions and seasoned riders involved, the upcoming equestrian events serve as both preparation and celebration for the European equestrian community. The venue's ability to attract not only spectators but also the elite of riding showcases the city's significance on the international equestrian stage. Both the CHI Basel and Agravis-Cup stand as testaments to the rich equestrian culture and the high level of competition these events promise.

This year's events at both venues will not only highlight remarkable equestrian talents but also serve as important qualifiers leading up to the World Cup finals, generating excitement and anticipation for what the next few months will bring. With champions like Isabell Werth competing and performances from top entertainment acts, the CHI Basel is shaping up to be a grand celebration of equestrian sport.
