Epic Games Store Launches For EU IPhones And Android

Gamers can now access Fortnite and more through the new digital storefront amid regulatory changes driving competition

The Epic Games Store has finally launched for users with iPhones and Android devices across the European Union. This development marks the end of nearly four years since the popular game Fortnite was removed from Apple’s App Store due to legal disputes over payment practices.

The launch is part of Epic's strategy to compete against established app stores, facilitating access to gaming content without going through the traditional methods typically enforced by Apple and Google. Gamers can now download the Epic Games Store directly onto their devices, allowing them to browse and install games like Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and Fall Guys.

Epic Games must now navigate the waters of app distribution enabled by the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which facilitates alternative digital marketplaces. Its arrival on iOS devices is currently exclusive to EU users, leaving those outside the bloc unable to access the new store or its offerings.

Epic has expressed its intention to expand its catalog by enabling other developers to distribute their games through the Epic Games Store. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, expressed gratitude to the European Commission for paving the way for this launch, viewing it as progress for developers and players alike.

Despite this achievement, Sweeney reminded users and developers alike of the continued hurdles they face, as Apple still restricts access to the Epic Games Store for users outside Europe. With Apple’s high fees and stringent control over the app market, Epic hopes the DMA will level the playing field for competition.

The new platform aims to drive up to 100 million installs across both iOS and Android before the year’s end, according to Steve Allison, who oversees the Epic Games Store. This ambitious target reflects Epic’s commitment to creating a more diverse gaming ecosystem amid the backdrop of its longstanding tensions with Apple.

For curious gamers and those wishing to download this new app store, the installation process is simple but involves several steps to bypass Apple’s controls. Players need to visit www.fortnite.com/download and follow on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

While Android users around the world can access the Epic Games Store immediately, iOS players who aren't within EU boundaries remain on the sidelines. This situation presents challenges, as the legal battles with Apple continue to keep Fortnite out of US users' hands for the time being.

Following the adoption of the DMA, the digital market is beginning to open up, as seen with Epic's success. This shift has not gone unnoticed, with other developers expressing interest, though many remain wary due to the substantial fees levied by Apple.

Although the EU provides new opportunities, the legal and operational challenges posed by Apple's ecosystem mean things are still complicated. Without significant changes, users may still face barriers when trying to access alternative app stores like Epic's.

Sweeney emphasized the importance of fighting for such accessibility, claiming Epic’s efforts aim to address broader issues within app ecosystems. "I've no regrets," he stated. "Apple had to be challenged."

Epic has also taken steps to make its games available through other independent app stores, indicating their commitment to diversifying gaming options beyond Apple's rigid system. The future remains uncertain for US and UK users, as both nations continue to lack the regulatory framework allowing app alternatives to thrive.

While the Epic Games Store has arrived for EU users, the path forward remains fraught with challenges as the company leverages this moment to advocate for greater marketplace accessibility. The reality is clear: the competition for mobile gaming supremacy is heating up.

Epic's recent moves signal not just the potential for change but also highlight the resolve of developers seeking to shift the current balance of power within the app marketplace. Stakeholders will be watching closely to see how this initiative develops and impacts the industry going forward.

With Epic's store officially live, the question remains whether it can draw enough attention away from rivals like the App Store and Google Play. Gamers everywhere are now encouraged to keep their eyes peeled, as the rivalry between Epic, Apple, and Google is set to evolve considerably.

The potential rewards for developers and gamers alike might just make this gradual shift worthwhile, fostering innovation and competition. Now, with new game titles on the horizon, players are eager to engage with the re-emergent Fortnite experience and see how it will run against its established competitors.

For many, this marks not just the return of Fortnite but the dawn of new possibilities within the gaming ecosystem, making it truly fascinating to watch how these dynamics play out.
