Enschede Marathon Set To Break Records With 18000 Runners

Volunteers and local supporters gear up for a thrilling race day atmosphere

On Sunday, April 13, 2025, the Enschede Marathon is set to take place, drawing an impressive 18,000 participants to the streets of Enschede. This year marks a historic high for the event, which has become a staple in the running community. With thousands of runners expected to dash through the city, spectators are gearing up to cheer on their friends and family members at the finish line.

Among the many volunteers supporting this monumental occasion is Nick Vredenbregt, a dedicated 69-year-old who has been involved with the Enschede Marathon for over a decade. "I want to give something back to the sport," Vredenbregt stated. Having been an avid runner himself, he now volunteers due to health issues that prevent him from competing. "For many years, I was able to participate in marathons and half-marathons thanks to the efforts of volunteers. Organizing such a large sports event entails a lot of work, and I've been committed to the Enschede Marathon for at least ten years," he added, showcasing his passion for the event.

On race day, more than 1,000 volunteers will be actively involved, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. Vredenbregt, who rides his bike around the city to coordinate efforts, expressed his mixed feelings about not being able to run. "I do it with a lot of love. Sometimes, I feel a bit envious of the runners preparing for their distances. But when you can help make the race a unique experience for them, it brings me joy," he remarked.

As excitement builds for the marathon, the event will also be broadcast live on TV Oost and via the RTV Oost website, allowing fans unable to attend in person to follow the action from home.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, Heracles Almelo supporter Rik Weits has decided to make a statement by running the marathon in his club's jersey. This playful act is in celebration of Heracles' recent derby win over their rivals, FC Twente. "It's a fun action," Weits explained, noting that his students at the school where he teaches are divided in their loyalties between Heracles and FC Twente. "I jokingly said that if Heracles won, I would run the Enschede Marathon in their shirt. If I get the Vak-P supporters behind me, I’ll probably run a lot faster!"

Weits' shirt features the words 'Derbywinst' along with the score '2-1' printed on the back, alongside the name 'Suf Suf Suf', a nod to Heracles' player Suf Podgoreanu. "I always see him play up close, and while he might stumble sometimes, he works incredibly hard and is loved by the fans," Weits commented.

On the same day as the marathon, both FC Twente and Heracles Almelo will be competing in the Eredivisie. FC Twente will face PEC Zwolle away at 2:30 PM, while Heracles Almelo will host AZ. "If we win against AZ and Twente wins against PEC Zwolle, everyone in the region will be happy on Sunday afternoon," Weits added, highlighting the interconnected excitement of the local football scene and the marathon.

The Enschede Marathon not only showcases the spirit of athleticism but also brings the community together, with volunteers, participants, and spectators all contributing to the vibrant atmosphere. As the clock ticks down to race day, the anticipation is palpable, and the city of Enschede is ready to welcome thousands of runners and their supporters.

With the marathon just hours away, the energy in Enschede is electric. Participants are finalizing their preparations, while volunteers like Vredenbregt are ensuring that everything is in place for a successful event. The Enschede Marathon promises to be a memorable occasion, filled with personal triumphs and community pride.

As the runners lace up their shoes and the volunteers get into position, one thing is clear: the Enschede Marathon is not just a race; it's a celebration of the human spirit, resilience, and the joy of running. Whether you're running, volunteering, or cheering from the sidelines, this event is set to be a highlight of the year in Enschede.
