Engaging Voters Ahead Of The 2024 Elections

Colleges and communities ramp up efforts to educate and empower voters before the polls open

With the 2024 elections just around the corner, voters across the United States are gearing up to make their voices heard. Whether you're preparing for the hustle and bustle of election day or planning to cast your ballot early, knowing the ins and outs of the voting process is key. Across various states, local organizations and educational institutions are stepping up to provide resources and support, making the road to the polls more accessible this year than ever.

For many, October signifies the starting line of the election season, with key deadlines looming. Voters in New Jersey need to get their act together before the quickly approaching registration deadline of October 15. Am I registered? That's the million-dollar question. Voters can find answers through the New Jersey Voter Registration Lookup Tool, checking their eligibility and status without any fuss.

Once registered, the attention turns to where to vote. Knowing the ins and outs of polling stations can be tricky. Thankfully, information specific to locations and times can be found on both state and county websites, allowing voters to stay informed. Sample ballots often include polling place details, helping voters feel prepared and ready for election day.

One way to avoid confusion is through early voting, which has gained traction among states aiming to increase voter turnout. From October 26 to November 3, Garden State residents have access to early voting locations. This option not only alleviates the stress of long lines on election day but also allows voters to cast their ballots at their convenience. Plus, no appointment is necessary, making it easier for everyone to participate. Staying informed about where to vote early is equally important, as polling sites can differ.

And what if you're unable to make it to the polls? No sweat. New Jersey voters can take advantage of vote-by-mail options, allowing ballots to be submitted remotely. Here’s the kicker: requesting these mail-in ballots is straightforward. Voters can apply through the state’s election website or via their County Clerk, with the clock ticking as the deadline for requests is just seven days before the election. For those mailing their ballots, make sure they’re postmarked by election day to count!

The call to action goes beyond just casting votes, urging citizens to engage beyond the ballot box. Students are leading the charge on college campuses across the country, with many institutions like Lake Michigan College (LMC) actively promoting voter registration and engagement. LMC proudly showcased its efforts by receiving the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge’s Gold Campus Award for Excellence in Student Voter Engagement. With their voting rate sitting at 41.5%, LMC is proudly standing above the national average of 30.6% for higher education institutions.

Tiffany Bohm, part of LMC’s political science faculty, shared insights on their long-standing initiative called LMC Votes, which aims to increase student engagement. “It is growing as a student-led initiative to increase voter engagement, but we have had LMC Votes since before the 2016 presidential election, where it is a community and campus-based group with students and external partners like the League of Women Voters,” Bohm explained. The active participation and excitement for this election season have clearly taken root within the student body, with many members gathering to watch vice presidential debates and engage in discussions about the election.

New Jersey isn’t the only state focused on maximizing voter participation. Out west, Hawaii voters are also preparing for the upcoming elections. Registered voters will receive their general election ballot packets starting October 18, with completed ballots needing to be returned by 7 p.m. on November 5. But what if you’re out of state during this time? Many college students and travelers might find themselves wondering how to navigate voting under these circumstances. The good news is, if you've previously registered, you can easily request your ballot to be sent to an alternate address by filling out the Absentee Ballot Application. Just make sure to submit this application at least seven days before the election to avoid any last-minute rush.

Election season brings with it various avenues for involvement, one of them being voter education. Resources abound for those wanting to brush up on their political knowledge. From classic literature focusing on democracy to attending political theater, there are numerous ways to enrich one’s perspective and prepare for the upcoming election. Engaging with local campaigns, volunteering, hosting fundraising events, or simply sharing information with friends can make all the difference. The Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw said, "The only thing we learn from history is we don’t learn from history." By participating and staying informed, voters can change the narrative.

This reflection on engagement isn’t just limited to academic circles. The fact is, your vote carries weight, and there are myriad ways to make it known. Political gatherings, campaigning for favored candidates, and even hosting discussion sessions at home can encourage community involvement, regardless of your political stance. Plus, getting together with like-minded friends to dissect recent debates or proposed policies can make the experience more enjoyable.

Voter engagement, particularly among young voters, is proving pivotal this year. Studies show educational initiatives increase participation rates, establishing the importance of accurately informing their peers. Beyond universities, community efforts across the country encourage voter registration drives and awareness campaigns, making it easy for eligible citizens to take part. Expanding access to reliable information helps combat the overwhelming narrative often surrounding elections. Whether you're a first-time voter or seasoned pro, knowing what to do and whom to rely on makes all the difference.

America stands at the precipice of another significant election season. While political debates rage and opinions clash, one truth remains unshakeable: every vote matters. Ensuring you're not only registered but informed, prepared, and ready to engage is imperative for anyone who wishes to participate. The resources are there; now it’s up to you to embrace them and make your voice heard.

Mark your calendars, gather your friends, and take part confidently—this election season, let’s make sure our votes count!
