Enagic Sports, a private school from Okinawa, is set to make history as it embarks on its inaugural journey at Koshien during the 97th National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament on March 21, 2025. This tournament marks not just a significant milestone for the young school, established just three years ago, but also a special moment for Haruto Higa, a third-year player. Haruto shares a treasured bond with his father, Yuji Higa, who graced the Koshien stage 23 years ago.
Both father and son are products of Coach Yoshitaka Kamitani, who is now leading the Enagic Sports team. Coach Kamitani has previously guided teams to Koshien glory, leading Uratami Commercial to the top four in 2008 and helping Miyazato Technical achieve its first Koshien appearance in 2014. As Enagic Sports steps onto this storied field, the connection between Haruto and Yuji adds an emotional layer to the team's journey, emphasized by a shared commitment to the game and their community.
The team is preparing to face Shigakkan from Aichi in their first match, and anticipation is high for this clash of talent. Yuji recalls his own experience playing as a catcher during the 2002 Koshien, where his team lost in the first round to Teikyo with a close score of 8-11. He fondly remembers, “Koshien is really a nice place,” and expresses hopes to see his son shine on the same stage he did two decades prior.
Enagic Sports prides itself on its unique approach, branded as 'no-sign baseball.' This methodology encourages players’ autonomy, allowing them to develop their instincts and decision-making abilities on the field. Coach Kamitani stresses, “Students are expected to take responsibility for their play, emphasizing the new baseball.” This freedom not only fosters creativity but also enhances the players’ engagement and connection to the game.
Established in 2021, Enagic Sports has quickly become known for its innovative structure, initially offering correspondence courses, it incorporated full-time educational programs in April 2024. The baseball club was instituted in 2022 and has flourished, boasting about 40 members, predominantly from Okinawa. The school does not only focus on baseball; its broader goal is to develop top-tier athletes who excel both locally and globally.
Haruto, while a backup catcher, exemplifies the team's spirit. Described as “the most hardworking player,” he regularly engages in practice beyond team schedules and even experimented with his batting style, transitioning from right-handed to left-handed. His dedication is not solely for personal advancement but stems from a desire to differentiate himself and make an impact. He reveals, “I want to appeal by doing something different.” This willingness to adapt and evolve showcases the broader philosophy that Enagic instills in its players.
As promising as Haruto’s athletic journey is, he also finds advice and support from his father. Yuji continues to be a guiding presence, offering insights and encouragement. They share moments where Yuji sends his son game footage for analysis, underlining the importance of communication in their relationship.
In preparation for the tournament, the school's facilities have been tailored to meet the players' needs. The dormitory, located a brief walk from the school, hosts students in cozy accommodations. The cafeteria boasts meals designed to provide up to 4000 calories daily, ensuring athletes are well-fed and physically prepared.
Beyond the baseball diamond, the Enagic Sports community embodies a commitment to local engagement. Players actively participate in regional events, such as Okinawan sumo tournaments and community gatherings, reinforcing the bond they share with local residents. Coach Kamitani emphasizes the team’s aim to win the Japan title while simultaneously fostering pride and joy among their supporters. The banner displayed at Nago City Hall proudly supports Enagic Sports' Koshien appearance, highlighting the community’s investment in their journey.
Thus, as the day of the first match draws near, the atmosphere is charged with excitement and pride. With hopes resting on the shoulders of Haruto and his teammates, Enagic Sports stands ready to write its own page in baseball history. As Yuji stated, “Watching my son play at Koshien is a dream fulfilled,” both the father and son reflect on a journey shaped by family, ambition, and community spirit. This inaugural appearance at Koshien could be just the beginning for Enagic Sports, a team that strives not only for victory but also for a lasting legacy.
