Emotional Farewell As Jimmy Carter's Legacy Is Honored

Public services begin with tributes reflecting on the former president's life and impact on humanity.

ATLANTA, Georgia -- The public farewell for former President Jimmy Carter commenced on Saturday, December 30, 2023, marking the beginning of six days dedicated to celebrating the life of the 39th U.S. president. His flag-draped casket traveled through his hometown of Plains, Georgia, and significant locations tied to his storied career, offering mourners and onlookers the opportunity to honor the man known for his deep rural roots and his monumental impact on American politics and global humanitarian efforts.

Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2023, at the age of 100, leaves behind a legacy as the longest-serving U.S. president, as well as as revered global figure dedicated to public service. The procession began with Carter’s casket tracing his roots, stopping at the family farm where he worked alongside Black sharecroppers during his youth, evoking strong emotions from attendees who gathered to pay their respects.

During the intimate service at The Carter Center, his family reflected on his life and legacy. "He was held up, propped up, and soothed by an amazing woman," said his son, Chip Carter, recalling his late mother Rosalynn Carter, who died just weeks before him. Chip noted, "The two of them together changed the world. And it was amazing to watch so closely." This sentiment was echoed by his grandson, Jason Carter, who chairs The Carter Center's governing board. "His spirit fills this place," he remarked, emphasizing how the organization embodies his grandfather's life's work.

The ceremony provided an opportunity for Carter’s family to honor his life and share personal stories. Jason highlighted the importance of the center, stating, "These buildings are filled with his life, not just because this is a museum to his life, but because of the people who are standing here." He expressed deep appreciation for the staff, calling them the "real keepers of my grandparents' legacy," reinforcing the notion of continuity and commitment to Carter’s values.

Alongside the family, hundreds of attendees included state and city officials, dignitaries, and ordinary citizens from Georgia who lined the streets as the motorcade passed. The procession made significant stops, including at the Georgia Capitol, where Governor Brian Kemp and other officials participated in reflection and tribute, acknowledging Carter's lasting influence on state governance. Calvin Smyre, former Georgia legislator, pointed out, "We stand on the shoulders of courageous people like Jimmy Carter," recognizing his role in promoting equality and access to governance during his time.

Mourners gathered from across the country to commemorate Carter’s contributions, as Wendy Shaw, who traveled from North Carolina, shared how she admired him for championing causes for those most in need. Children and families joined together to reflect on the values Carter stood for, emphasizing the unity his memory brought.

The outpouring of love was palpable, with Chip Carter recalling, "There was a lot of love on the side of the road. Every overpass had people on it. It gave you goosebumps just to sit in the van and see the reaction of those people of Georgia." It was not just a display of respect for a president, but for the man who remained committed to serving others well beyond his time in office.

Opening the ceremonies was marked by military honors, as pallbearers who served alongside Carter honored him with dignity. His remains will lie in repose at The Carter Center until early Tuesday morning, January 2, 2024, allowing the public to pay their respects continually. Following this phase of memorialization, national rites will be honored with services held at the U.S. Capitol, culminating with his funeral at Washington National Cathedral.

After the national memorial services conclude, Carter will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, Rosalynn, on the Plains property they cherished for decades. This grave site, marked by the humble beginnings both Carter and Rosalynn shared, is symbolic of the lifelong bond they had, as well as their shared commitment to serving their community and the world.

Throughout the farewell services, those gathering reflected not only on the public figure but the personal connection Carter had with many, weaving together stories of humility, service, and dedication to others. A legacy woven through years of commitment to human rights, democracy, and peace will undoubtedly remain alive as mourners both local and global honor the life and contributions of President Jimmy Carter.

The ceremonies are not just about mourning, but also about celebrating the lasting influence Carter had during his lifetime and the powerful messages of empathy and honesty he conveyed through his work and personal relationships. These values remain ever pertinent as the memorials continue to pay tribute to the man who taught many the importance of giving back and working toward the greater good.
