Emirates Airline, one of the largest carriers based in the Middle East, has announced strict new measures aimed at enhancing passenger safety. Recently, the airline introduced a ban on pagers and walkie-talkies on flights following several alarming sabotage incidents linked to communication devices. This decision was prompted after the usage of these devices was associated with deadly explosions orchestrated by the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah, which have resulted in significant casualties across Lebanon.
The directive explicitly prohibits all passengers traveling to, from, or via Dubai from carrying pagers or walkie-talkies—whether those items are packed in cabin baggage or checked luggage. Emirates stated, "All passengers travelling on flights to, from or via Dubai are prohibited from transporting pagers and walkie-talkies." The airline emphasized the seriousness of this policy, asserting, "Such items found in passengers' hand luggage or checked baggage will be confiscated by Dubai Police."
This ban follows tragic events last month during which blasts reportedly killed at least 37 individuals and injured nearly 3,000 people. These explosions have created palpable unease and have prompted other airlines to review their safety protocols concerning flights to and from the turbulent region.
Alongside the ban, Emirates has also upgraded its flight cancellation policies for several destinations across the Middle East. Currently, routes to Iraq and Iran remain suspended until the upcoming Tuesday, creating disruptions for passengers scheduled for travel. The cancellations were initially announced as precautionary measures following significant missile attacks on Israel, which raised concerns over the safety of air travel within the area.
Emirates has also recently indicated its intent to resume flights to Jordan on Sunday. Meanwhile, flights to and from Lebanon will stay suspended until October 15—a direct response to Israel's intensified military operations, particularly around Beirut where conflict is increasingly spilling over.
Other airlines are similarly reevaluated their routes, with numerous service suspensions affecting those traveling to and from Beirut and various Middle Eastern airports. This ripple effect across carriers highlights the extent of the regional tensions and raises questions concerning air travel stability and passenger safety.
