Colombian tennis player Emiliana Arango, ranked 133rd in the world, achieved a notable milestone on Thursday by advancing to the quarterfinals of the Mérida Open. She did so by overcoming British player Francesca Jones with scores of 3-6, 6-3, 3-4, as Jones had to retire due to injury.
The match, held under sweltering conditions, featured several pivotal moments. Jones opened strong, breaking Arango’s serve to lead 3-1 in the first set. Despite Arango’s effort to break back, Jones prevailed, sealing the set with her own serve at 6-3.
Arango’s resilience shone through as the second set unfolded. She showcased her superior groundstrokes, breaking Jones’s serve twice to lead the set 6-3. "It was a tough match, the sun was hitting our faces and it made it hard to hold serve. I wasn’t at 100%, but I gave 100%,” Arango stated post-match, reflecting on the challenges the players faced.
The third set was contentious, characterized by six breaks of serve from both players. Just when the momentum seemed to sway, with Jones leading 4-3, she requested medical assistance. After struggling with discomfort, she opted to retire from the match, handing Arango the victory.
Through the match, Arango faced challenges but capitalized on the hefty number of errors made by her opponent, with Jones committing 56 unforced errors throughout the match. Arango registered only 11 winners but proved effective during key moments, resulting in her ninth consecutive win, following her success at the WTA 125k event in Cancún.
“Jones took the lead early on, but Emiliana kept her composure and found her rhythm,” explained one analyst. Arango's statistics from the match were impressive; she recorded two aces and won 65% of her second serve points. She demonstrated her ability to convert break points effectively, winning 86% of those opportunities during the match.
Looking forward, Arango, the sole Colombian representative remaining after Camila Osorio withdrew due to injury, will take on Slovakia’s Rebecca Šramková, who is currently ranked 40th globally. Šramková secured her spot in the quarterfinals by defeating the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia with scores of 7-6, 6-3.
The upcoming match is set to be another challenge for Arango, who will need to maintain her focus and level of play to continue her impressive run at the tournament. With her current form and competitive spirit, Arango appears poised to tackle the next stage of her campaign.
