Emergency School Closures Hit Oxfordshire Schools Today

Fringford Church of England Primary and others affected by heating and power failures.

Emergency situations have forced several schools across Oxfordshire to close today, Thursday, January 30, 2025, due to heating and power issues. Notably impacted are Fringford Church of England Primary School, The Cooper School, and Southwold Primary School, all of which have faced unexpected interruptions to their normal routines.

Fringford Church of England Primary School, located at The Green near Bicester, is closed after experiencing heating failure. According to the Oxfordshire County Council’s emergency school closures website, the school is anticipated to reopen tomorrow, January 31. A representative from the school confirmed, "Due to the heating failure, we are confirming the school is closed today and will remain closed until Friday at the earliest," reported by the Oxford Mail.

Meanwhile, The Cooper School and Southwold Primary School were also affected, both forced to shut their doors today due to power problems impacting the area. The outages reportedly left nearly 2,000 homes without electricity for up to four hours. A spokesperson for The Cooper School explained the situation, stating, "Due to the power cut, we are confirming the school is definitely closed all day today." The school also assured parents, "SSE (the power company) have said we should have power back in the afternoon so we expect to be open as normal tomorrow." They ensured parents about the continuation of scheduled activities, as the upcoming Year 10 Drama Trip will still take place as planned, with staff available to assist students at Reception.

At Southwold Primary School, the message was similar. A spokesperson announced, "The school will be closed today due to no heating, as a result of the power outage on the estate. We apologize for any inconvenience and will provide updates as soon as possible."

The situation highlights the communication protocols established by local authorities for emergencies. OCCC stated, "Schools have contact arrangements for when they need to close the school at short notice. Contacts may include bespoke parent mailing systems, text, social media, and the school website. This is the expected source of information for parents to know about the closing and expected reopening of schools." The advisory encourages institutions to notify local radio stations to spread the word effectively.

While closures can be frustrating for families, procedures are put in place to keep everyone informed and minimize disruptions to student learning. With the power expected to be restored later today, there is hope for normalcy to return swiftly. School leaders express gratitude for the patience and support from parents during these unexpected interruptions.

Today serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities schools face when unexpected emergencies arise. Community support and efficient communication play key roles during times of crisis, facilitating swift resolutions to such impactful situations.

Looking forward, families and staff are encouraged to stay updated on the current situation, especially as OCCC and school administrators continually reassess the operational capabilities moving forward. Parents are reminded to check the school’s social media and official communications for the latest updates on reopening times and any follow-up changes to schedules.
