Elvis Costello And T Bone Burnett Return With Coward Brothers

New Audible series and album celebrate their long-time collaboration and unique storytelling

Elvis Costello and T Bone Burnett have unveiled their latest collaboration, bringing the quirky world of their fictional characters, Henry and Howard Coward, to life through their new Audible Original series titled The True Story of the Coward Brothers. This series, which premieres alongside their self-titled soundtrack album, showcases the charm and musical prowess of the duo, known for their rich history together. While many artists may shy away from technology, especially Artificial Intelligence, Costello seems unfazed, jokingly claiming, "Nobody wants to be me anyway." This laid-back approach characterizes the creative spirit behind their latest work.

The audible series features three parts, scripted by Costello and directed by the iconic Christopher Guest, the mastermind behind the comedic hits This is Spinal Tap and Best in Show. Accompanying this unique storytelling endeavor is the soundtrack, which spans 20 tracks, highlighting the duo's lengthy creative partnership. An extensive six-CD boxed set titled King of America and Other Realms reintroduces classic collaborations from the past four decades between the two artists.

Costello has expressed how liberally the lockdown affected his creative process. “I didn’t feel confined creatively. I’d discovered ways to record confidently with my cohorts. And this idea to tell it as a story came up during the pandemic. It was the gift of time,” he explained. Interestingly, the scripted project had initially been floated as an animated cartoon concept over 15 years ago, showcasing how artistic visions can evolve over time.

When discussing their working relationship, Burnett offered insights on their shared history, explaining how they began playing together over four decades ago. “It’s like we’ve always been brothers, though we’re not genetically related,” Burnett said, emphasizing the deep bonds forged through music and creative endeavors. Their upcoming tour promises to offer audiences both old and new hits from their diverse discography.

The duo has historically delighted fans with their live performances, and the impending tour, set for early 2025, guarantees to revisit and revive classic moments from their extensive careers. Costello and Burnett aim to create transcendent experiences, merging nostalgia with fresh renditions of their work.

Their diverse style, often characterized as ‘European-inflected Americana,’ presents its fair share of satire, humor, and reflection on the music business itself. Costello pointed out the industry challenges faced today, noting the overwhelming number of releases drowning out individual creativity. Yet, he highlights the need for artists like himself to innovate and stay relevant, stating, “You have to be a sharp needle in a big haystack.”

Addressing the growing concern surrounding AI and its applications within music, Costello remains optimistic, dismissing apprehensions with playful irreverence. He remarked, “I live in a different universe to AI,” which allows him to perceive the technology’s encroachment without serious concern. This perspective sets him apart from other artists troubled by the potential imitation or replacement of creative voices by machines.

Parallel to their bold embrace of audacious creativity, Costello finds joy in weaving heartfelt narratives throughout their performance and storytelling. He described how their project blurs the line between satire and sincerity: "The story is not entirely frivolous. It develops somewhere different than it begins.”

The essence of the Coward Brothers lies not only in their music but also within the characters they portray. They invite listeners to explore the colorful personas of Henry and Howard Coward, who serve as reflections of Costello and Burnett themselves, engagingly portrayed through witty dialogues and thought-provoking themes.

Fans eagerly await the arrival of these new creative works, proving once again the duo’s unparalleled ability to mix genuine emotion with sharp wit. Their commitment to entertaining audiences with both engaging storytelling and musical excellence stands as the hallmark of their prolific careers.

Following their bold projects, Costello and Burnett will also extend their musical storytelling to the stage. Tickets for their upcoming U.S. tour are already available, drawing anticipation from fans who resonate with their unique blend of artistry. They aim to embody the roles of Henry and Howard Coward once more, embarking on another chapter of comedic and musical exploration.
