"There's no time for a serene festival," he admits, reflecting on the intense schedule during this festive season. "A visit to the Christmas market for a relaxed mulled wine is hardly possible – much to my family's dismay, which I miss a little too." His dedication is evident as he travels around 8 to 12 hours each day to facilitate the broadcasts, often collapsing exhausted at the end of the day. Yet, his children, who are just as enthusiastic about the sport, find joy watching the championship and even have dartboards set up at home.
To prepare for reporting on the tournament, Paulke has shifted his focus from pure statistics to capturing the atmosphere of the championship. "I enjoy this very much right now because we can tell many colorful stories. There are players from all over the world at 'Ally Pally'..." This emphasis on narrative allows him to connect with fans on a personal level, sharing quirky and inspiring tales of dart players, such as Rashad Sweeting from the Bahamas, who add character to the event.
Each year, the quality of play at the championship continues to rise. Paulke observed, "Even seemingly crazy outsiders reach the later rounds, annoy favorites, and show great class." This evolution also reflects the increasing popularity and importance of darts as it captures the imagination of audiences worldwide, especially with young talents like Luke Littler, at just 17 years old, making headlines.
Yet, the challenge of balancing appealing commentary remains. "We always say, 'Dart players need good timing'... It’s important to recognize when it becomes more emotional, and when we should deliver more numbers and facts," Paulke explains. Each game requires him to read the pace of the action effectively, engaging audiences not just with facts but also with the thrill of the sport.
Despite facing the emotional highs of the tournament, Paulke looks forward to unwinding after the grand final on January 3rd. He will be participating again shortly after at the Celebrity Darts World Championship, scheduled for January 5th on ProSieben. "So long I’ll hold out, and afterwards it’s off to a relaxing vacation with the family," he says with anticipation.
