Carlisle United has secured the signing of midfielder Elliot Embleton on a three-and-a-half year contract from Blackpool, marking the Cumbrians' second acquisition of the January transfer window.
Embleton, who at 25 years old is seen as a promising addition to the squad, previously had substantial experience with Sunderland, where he made 92 appearances and scored 11 goals. His most notable contribution was during the play-off final victory at Wembley over Wycombe Wanderers, where he opened the scoring, helping Sunderland secure promotion back to the Championship.
After spending significant years developing at Sunderland's youth academy, Embleton's career featured loan spells with Grimsby Town, Blackpool, and Derby County before moving to Blackpool permanently last summer. His time with the Seasiders saw him contribute 23 appearances this season but left him yearning for stability after struggling for consistent game time and facing injuries.
Kelly United's head coach Mike Williamson expressed excitement over Embleton’s signing, stating, "We’re delighted to have signed someone of Elliot’s calibre, amid a lot of interest from other clubs. He’s played many games already for Blackpool this season, so he arrives fit and ready to go. He will add valuable quality to the squad and is someone who will excite the fans."
Sporting Director Rob Clarkson echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Embleton's technical skills: "Elliot is a player I have known for a long time, and he possesses outstanding technical quality with both feet. He is creative and will help our team generate chances and score goals. We are delighted to have completed this signing early and are excited to see him contribute at Carlisle.”
Reflecting on his transition, Embleton shared his excitement about joining Carlisle United, stating, “I'm buzzing to be here. It's part of a long-term project which I discussed with the manager and Rob Clarkson, and I'm excited to be part of it.” He noted his childhood ties to Sunderland and recounted how his development there set the stage for his current career. "Sunderland is my home club; I spent nearly 20 years there and progressing to the first team and winning at Wembley was a proud moment for my family and me. It was only the start though; I faced challenges and learned much along the way,” he added.
When discussing his connection with Blackpool, Embleton acknowledged the difficulty he faced upon his return to the club, noting, "It just didn't work out this time unfortunately. I had injuries and struggled for minutes upon my return, which was frustrating."
His contract at Blackpool lasted only half a year after his move, but the attacking midfielder was excited about his opportunity at Carlisle. He stated, “It was also about playing the style of football under managers here which suits me, which I was eager to do.”
Embleton's announcement as the latest signing was welcomed at Carlisle, especially after their challenging campaign to escape relegation danger. His debut could come soon as he is set to be available for the upcoming match against Tranmere Rovers, with Williamson indicating his readiness to integrate Embleton quickly.
Carlisle United's strategy this January appears focused on enhancing the squad as they aim to climb the League Two standings and avoid relegation. Embleton's extensive experience is anticipated to help the team as it battles to gain traction moving forward.
Notably, Embleton's past successes, including his contributions to Sunderland's return to the Championship and memorable moments at significant matches like Wembley, contribute to his reputation as he steps onto the field for Carlisle United. Fans and management alike are hopeful he will rekindle his form and shine at Brunton Park.
Having previously linked with clubs across England and the Scottish Premier League, Embleton chose Carlisle, signaling his commitment to this new chapter. He aims to reintegrate himself fully, contribute significantly, and hopefully replicate past successes by scoring and assisting goals.
“Just get as many goals and assists as I can and obviously winning games as well is key. We aim to stay up this season, and I’m focused on getting games and victories under our belt,” Embleton concluded.
With the January window still open, fans will be eagerly watching for potential additions to the squad as Carlisle United works to strengthen its position as the season progresses.
