Elisabeth Musical Returns With New Cast In Japan

Nozomi Futo and Asumi Rio to star as Elisabeth in upcoming performances

The highly acclaimed musical Elisabeth is set to return to Japan for performances from October 2025 to January 2026, captivating audiences once again with its powerful narrative and stunning performances. This production marks the 25th anniversary of the Toho version of the musical, which first premiered in Japan in 2000, following its initial debut by the Takarazuka Revue in 1996.

In this new rendition, the title role of Elisabeth will be played by two of Japan's most celebrated musical theater stars, Nozomi Futo and Asumi Rio, in a W cast. Futo, who has been a prominent figure in the Takarazuka Revue as the top star of the Snow Troupe, has continued to shine post-retirement with her exceptional performances in various productions, including next to normal and Moulin Rouge! The Musical. She has also received numerous accolades, including the Yomiuri Theater Award for Best Actress.

Asumi Rio, known for her overwhelming popularity as the top star of the Takarazuka Revue's Flower Troupe, has also maintained a strong presence in theater and television since her retirement. Her recent works include notable performances in musicals such as The King and I and 9 to 5, showcasing her refined elegance and depth in acting.

The role of Tot, the enigmatic figure representing death, will be portrayed by Yuuta Furukawa, who will perform in all venues. Additionally, Yoshio Inoue will take on the role during the Tokyo performances, while Kazuki Yamasaki will perform in Hokkaido, Osaka, and Fukuoka. With such a talented cast, audiences can anticipate a fresh interpretation of these iconic roles.

The creative team behind Elisabeth includes renowned talents such as Michael Kunze, who is responsible for the script and lyrics, Sylvester Levay, who composed the music and arranged it, and Koike Shuuichirou, who will direct and translate the production. The storyline of Elisabeth centers around the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, a figure known for her extraordinary beauty and tragic fate. Performances are scheduled to take place at several prominent venues across Japan. The Tokyo performances will be held at the Tokyu Theater Orb in October and November 2025. Following this, the musical will travel to Hokkaido, where it will be staged at the Sapporo Cultural Arts Theater hitaru in December 2025. The Osaka performances will occur at the Umeda Arts Theater Main Hall in December 2025 and January 2026, concluding with shows in Fukuoka at the Hakataza Theater in January 2026.
