Eleven Amish Family Members Hospitalized Due To Toxic Mushrooms

Quick actions by first responders avert potential tragedy for the Peach Bottom Township family

On the evening of October 11, 2023, eleven members of an Amish family were rushed to the hospital after consuming toxic mushrooms they had foraged. This unfortunate incident sent shockwaves through Peach Bottom Township, located near the Pennsylvania-Maryland border, highlighting the dangers associated with mushroom foraging.

According to reports from the Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company, the family, which included both adults and nine children aged from one year to thirty-nine, found the mushrooms earlier on the same day. They presumed the mushrooms were safe to eat and included them in their dinner, oblivious to the potential risks they posed.

The call for help came around 9:37 PM when one family member walked approximately half a mile to the nearest payphone to dial 911—an effort made necessary due to the absence of telephone service within their home, as is customary within some Amish communities. This prompted the immediate dispatch of emergency responders, including six emergency medical service (EMS) units.

Gregory Fantom, Lieutenant with Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company, described the situation as alarming. Upon their arrival, the responders found all eleven family members exhibiting severe symptoms consistent with mushroom poisoning. Initial reports indicated the family was lethargic and disoriented, raising concerns over the possibility of mass casualty, which heightened the urgency of their response.

The family was transported to WellSpan York Hospital, where they received treatment and were fortunately released the following day. The quick action of the emergency services was instrumental, averting what could have resulted in tragic outcomes.

While the specific type of mushrooms consumed is currently under investigation, experts warn of the numerous hazardous species found throughout North America. The British Columbia Centre for Disease Control reports around 250 varieties of poisonous mushrooms, and these cases are not isolated; the National Library of Medicine notes over 6,000 instances of toxic mushroom ingestions annually across the U.S., often impacting children.

Misidentification often leads to such poisoning incidents, as many toxic mushrooms closely resemble their edible counterparts. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises individuals without formal training to consult knowledgeable mycologists before consuming wild mushrooms, emphasizing the importance of sourcing mushrooms from reputable grocery stores or professional foraging services.

This incident not only serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved with wild foraging but also illuminates the risk factors specific to the Amish lifestyle, where technology and conveniences often take a backseat. The refusal to modernize and embrace technology can leave such communities vulnerable, especially concerning something as common as accessing emergency services.

Further investigations by the Pennsylvania State Police are underway, seeking to understand all factors at play. Local authorities hope to gather insights to prevent future incidents, especially as the appeal of mushroom foraging can lead to fatal misunderstandings.

The Peach Bottom Township incident is both eye-opening and unsettling, offering valuable lessons for everyone—from seasoned foragers to those simply curious about discovering food from the wild.

With the leaves beginning to change and fall, many will likely find themselves lured by the prospect of harvesting mushrooms, whether for culinary experiments or simply as part of autumn traditions. Understanding what to collect and what to avoid could be the difference between delight and disaster.
