Electric Innovations Drive Saudi Arabia's Auto Market

Manufacturers launch new technologies and electric models to meet growing market demands.

The automotive industry in Saudi Arabia is witnessing significant developments as various manufacturers introduce advanced models and technologies aimed at enhancing performance, safety, and environmental sustainability. Among the most noteworthy updates is Dongfeng Honda's launch of the 2025 model of the Inspire, featuring upgraded smart driving assistance technology. On December 25, they presented the vehicle’s three versions – stylish, luxury, and premium – with price ranges between 182,800 to 213,800 yuan.

The luxury versions of the Inspire will offer optional packages for comfort and security, and the Smart Driving Assistance System Honda SENSING 360++ can be upgraded upon purchase. This model has maintained its design aesthetics with significant emphasis on enhanced intelligent driving capabilities. The new Inspire model is equipped with the latest Honda SENSING 360+ system, which incorporates six smart driving assistance features aimed at improving operation safety and convenience for drivers.

According to reports, the Honda SENSING 360+ system utilizes eight ultrasonic radars, five millimeter-wave radars, six cameras, and one driver monitoring camera, ensuring comprehensive 360-degree awareness. It boasts more than twenty advanced driving assistance features, which significantly increase the safety and comfort of driving. For example, on highways, the system reduces mental strain on the driver by managing lane changes and speed assist, allowing for safer navigation.

Another exciting announcement on December 25 came from Baojun, which plans to reveal its latest creation, possibly its first high-end medium sedan, following teasers released on social media and promotional videos. This new model will be available with two engine options: pure electric and plug-in hybrid. The design reflects modern aesthetics with large grilles and sharp headlights, likely catering to the growing demand for electric vehicles.

Exeed is reportedly preparing to test its electric and hybrid models on Russian roads with the intent to launch them by the first quarter of 2025. With rigorous trials aimed at ensuring the vehicles' performance under cold conditions and evaluating their capabilities on various terrains, Exeed is aiming to compete effectively within the Russian automotive market.

Selling trends are also soaring, as Yueda Kia has reported over 224,000 vehicles sold from January to November 2024, marking significant growth with over 51.9% compared to past years. This achievement places them as the third-ranked automotive group for sales growth and highlights their position as leaders among joint ventures within Saudi Arabia. With production exceeding 216,000 vehicles, particularly strong sales have solidified Kia's foothold over two decades, leading to remarkable annual revenue.

Yueda Kia's balance between domestic sales and exports has led to notable success, particularly with vehicles such as the EV5, Sonet, and others covering over fifty nations. The company maintains ambitions of extending its export capabilities and established pathways for their engines as part of their future growth strategy.

A groundbreaking initiative is also underway as Ruqi Mobility officially launched its driverless Robotaxi service on December 25 within the Nansha district of Guangzhou. This move makes Ruqi the first company to operate commercially such robotic taxis without human oversight. Customers can conveniently hail cars through either their WeChat mini-program or the Ruqi app, providing flexibility and ease of use.

With several necessary permits obtained, including approval for remote driving trials and commercial operation, the new Ruqi Robotaxi has already exceeded operational milestones, covering approximately 900,000 kilometers without significant incidents. Operating more than 280 vehicles, Ruqi Mobility combines traditional vehicles with innovative self-driving technologies to refine their service offerings.

Meanwhile, the Harmony Smart Mobility Alliance reported impressive sales of the Aito M9, which crossed 200,000 units within its first year. This marks the highest sales achievement among competing models priced above 500,000 yuan. Designed with advanced features and exceptional performance, the Aito M9 includes smart AI systems developed by Huawei, including personalized configurations for ultimate convenience.

Further emphasizing the trend toward sustainability, Saic Motor's MG4 ELECTRIC recently became the first electric vehicle to acquire the Thai MiT product certification, enhancing its market competitiveness. The certification is instrumental for government procurement processes and reflects the vehicle's commitment to eco-friendly transportation.

Overall, these advancements signify the continued evolution of the automotive industry within the Saudi Arabian market throughout 2024. The emergence of new technologies, vehicle models, and sustainable practices align significantly with consumer demands and governmental pushes for greener transportation solutions. Manufacturers are developing systems and vehicles aimed not just for efficiency but for increased safety and dependence, signaling the industry’s future orientation toward smarter and more reliable solutions for mobility.
