On February 20, the elderly victim from Montabaur was contacted by someone claiming to be a professor from the Charité hospital. The scammer stated, "A relative of the retiree urgently needs expensive medication to save her life." Believing the situation to be dire, the pensioner was persuaded to hand over gold bars and jewelry worth several tens of thousands of euros.
Earlier, on another occasion, the victim from Kempten received an alarming call indicating his wife had been involved in a serious car accident, claiming she had caused the death of a pregnant woman. To prevent her immediate arrest, the scammers demanded €50,000. Adding to the deception, the perpetrators arranged for a woman to pose as the victim's wife on the phone, appealing emotionally to persuade him to comply and send money.
The elderly man, believing he needed to act quickly to save his wife, drove from Kempten to Kaufbeuren for the exchange. There, he met with someone pretending to be a court official, to whom he handed over a bag containing gold and coins worth around €200,000. It wasn’t until after the transfer was made and he called his wife to check on her wellbeing, confirming she was safe, did he realize he had been scammed.
Authorities are astounded at how effective these manipulative strategies are. Police have launched investigations but are currently without information on the suspects involved.
