El Chilar Expands Cinnamon Recall Over Lead Concerns

Recall grows as health departments investigate elevated lead levels linked to cinnamon products

El Chilar HF, LLC has expanded its recall of ground cinnamon after testing revealed concerning levels of lead. This recent recall affects additional lots of their "Cinnamon Ground" product, first identified back in March 2024.

Initially, the recall included lots D-300 EX1024 and F272 EX1026. The latest expansion adds lots E-054, EX 0225, D-181, and EX 0624, amounting to over 1,500 packages recalled due to elevated lead levels.

Despite these warnings, there have been no reported illnesses connected to the consumption of this cinnamon. The decision to expand the recall stems from potential issues with contaminated raw materials supplied to the company.

Authorities have detected lead levels significantly higher than permissible limits, which can lead to severe health risks. Short-term exposure might not show symptoms, but prolonged ingestion is linked to memory problems, kidney dysfunction, developmental delays, and other serious health issues.

Particularly vulnerable are children, whose developing bodies can absorb lead more easily. The Maryland Department of Health is directly involved, having gathered samples from the affected lots earlier this year and confirming the alarming lead content.

To mitigate risks, consumers are strongly advised to check their homes for any El Chilar ground cinnamon products. Specifically, those with lot numbers E-054, D-181, EX 0225, and EX 0624 should not be consumed and can be returned to stores for refunds.

Parents and guardians are urged to consult with healthcare providers if their children may have ingested the recalled cinnamon. Even without reports of illnesses, public health officials stress the importance of monitoring any potential lead exposure.
