As college basketball enthusiasts gear up for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, excitement is palpable as eight Catholic universities prepare to battle for glory. Officially announced on March 16, 2025, this year’s March Madness is not just a tournament; it’s a historical event for many participating schools.
Leading the pack is St. John’s University, the #2 seed in the West region. The Red Storm clinched their top seed after winning the Big East Tournament and maintaining a strong regular-season record. This marks a significant achievement for St. John’s, who last advanced beyond the first round in 1999. Their opening game is set for March 20 against the University of Nebraska Omaha, and with the best defense in the country this season, hopes are high for their prospects.
Following close behind is the Marquette University Golden Eagles, who earned a #7 seed in the South region. With a record of 23-10 this season, Marquette is looking to capitalize on their experience as they head into the tournament, facing the University of New Mexico on March 21. Their senior guard, Stevie Mitchell, has been vocal about his desire to inspire younger players. “To see how grateful they are for us, it really puts life into perspective,” he commented. The team's mentoring approach reflects a commitment to giving back to the community, beyond just winning games.
Also sharing the #7 seed with Marquette is Saint Mary’s College. The Gaels, who are facing Vanderbilt on March 21 in the East region, have demonstrated resilience all season and clinched the regular-season championship in the West Coast Conference.
Gonzaga University, always a formidable contender, enters as the #8 seed in the Midwest region. While their performance in recent years has been nothing short of impressive, ESPN has highlighted this season’s team as “a difficult team to assess.” Their opening match on March 20 will be against the University of Georgia, a critical test for the Bulldogs.
Returning to the tournament for the fifth consecutive year is Creighton University, now the #9 seed in the South region. The Bluejays will battle the University of Louisville on March 20. After reaching the Sweet Sixteen last year, they are determined to replicate that success despite losing to St. John’s in the Big East Tournament finals.
Meanwhile, the Xavier University Musketeers are set for a dose of tournament action as the #11 seed in the Midwest region, playing the University of Texas on March 19. This tournament marks a return for Xavier after missing out last year.
Two other schools are also making headlines with historical significance. Saint Francis University from Loretto, PA, clinched their spot in the tournament for the first time in 34 years by narrowly defeating Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) 46-43 on March 11. Their coach, Rob Krimmel, leaned on his faith during this pressure-packed moment, relying on phrases like “audience of one” and “surrender” written on his play card. They will face Alabama State University on March 18.
Finally, the Mount St. Mary’s University Mountaineers, also entering as a #16 seed in the East region, will face American University on March 19. This marks a return for Mount St. Mary’s following their previous claim to the NCAA tournament.
The stage is set, and as March Madness kicks off with first games starting today, these Catholic schools carry with them not just the hopes of their respective campuses but also the pride of their traditions. From St. John’s resurgence to Saint Francis’ historic return, the tournament promises thrilling matchups and unforgettable moments, showcasing the spirit of college basketball.
