The Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture has issued vital recommendations for sugarcane farmers across various governorates, emphasizing the importance of optimal planting and care practices for the upcoming season. The guidance aims to enhance the productivity and quality of the sugarcane crop, which is crucial for both local consumption and export.
According to the Ministry's advisory, the ideal dates for planting spring sugarcane crops are set for March 1st in regions such as Kom-Ombo, Edfu, Armant, Qus, Naj Hammadi, and Deshna. In contrast, farmers in Girga and Abu Qurqas are advised to commence planting by March 15th, ensuring that all planting is completed by the end of March to avoid adverse effects on yield, particularly for the new varieties Giza 3 and Giza 4.
To further support the farmers, the Ministry has highlighted the necessity of addressing any issues related to frost damage and aging plants before the end of March. This proactive approach is essential, as rising temperatures can significantly impact the quality of sugarcane yields. Farmers are urged to burn the remnants of previous crops and clear the fields to prepare for the new planting season.
In addition to these recommendations, the Ministry has stressed the importance of starting irrigation three to four weeks after planting. This initial irrigation, referred to as the "life irrigation," is critical for promoting rapid germination. Farmers are encouraged to adjust irrigation schedules based on soil type and local temperature conditions.
Moreover, the first hoeing, known as "scratching," should be conducted lightly and superficially to avoid disturbing young plants. Following this, farmers should apply the first dose of nitrogen fertilizer after the initial hoeing, supplemented with approximately 100 kg of potassium sulfate to ensure optimal growth.
As part of the ongoing efforts to combat pests, the Ministry advises regular inspections of fields for any signs of insect infestations. If detected, farmers should apply solar energy in irrigation water at a rate of 30 liters per feddan to manage these pests effectively.
Continuing with pest control, the Ministry emphasizes the need to manage weed growth inside sugarcane fields, especially after harvesting. This ongoing maintenance is vital to ensure the health of the crops and maximize yields.
On another front, the Egyptian Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, Assem El Gazzar, recently announced the details of the largest housing initiative in Egypt’s history, which will see the introduction of 400,000 new housing units. This ambitious project aims to provide affordable housing options for limited and middle-income families across the country.
As part of this initiative, 115,000 housing units will be launched under the "Housing for All Egyptians" program, which is designed to support those with limited financial means through the Social Housing Fund and real estate financing options. The Minister confirmed that the sale of middle-income housing units will begin on May 15, while units for low-income families will be available starting July 1.
El Gazzar elaborated that a total of 261,253 housing units will be made available through the Housing and Construction Bank, with plans to cater to all income segments. He stated, "The plan includes units for limited, middle, and above-average income individuals, in addition to luxury units. Prices will range between 10,000 Egyptian pounds (approximately $198 USD) and 35,000 Egyptian pounds ($692 USD) per square meter, depending on the specifications and location of the units."
The ministry has already commenced the construction of 100,000 housing units as part of the "Our Home" and "Zlal" projects. The "Our Home" initiative will see 60,000 units constructed across 23 new cities, while the "Zlal" project will focus on 40,000 luxury units distributed among 17 cities, utilizing the latest architectural designs.
To accommodate the diverse needs of residents in these new housing developments, the ministry is also implementing essential service facilities. These will include infrastructure improvements, landscaping, garden lighting, and organized parking areas, all designed to enhance the living conditions in these urban communities.
Furthermore, the Minister noted that a memorandum of understanding will be signed between the New Urban Communities Authority and a notable Egyptian company named Modon. This partnership aims to establish a joint venture that will provide integrated management services for facilities and real estate in the new urban cities, adhering to the latest global standards.
As Egypt continues to develop its agricultural and housing sectors, these initiatives reflect a commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens, ensuring food security through enhanced agricultural practices and providing affordable housing solutions for all.
