Egypt Implements Daylight Saving Time Starting April 24

The government announces new time regulations and increased support for informal workers.

The Egyptian National Railways has announced that it will implement daylight saving time starting from Thursday evening, April 24, 2025. The change means that when the clock strikes midnight at 24:00, it will be moved forward by 60 minutes, making it 1:00 AM. Consequently, train schedules will be adjusted to reflect this new time, with services being considered delayed by one hour until they reach their final destinations that night.

The rationale behind adopting daylight saving time is to conserve energy, including electricity, diesel, gas, and petroleum materials. This initiative aims to enhance the efficient use of available resources and maximize the benefits of daylight in workplaces.

The government has officially set the start date for daylight saving time on the last Friday of April 2025, which falls on April 25. This aligns with Law No. 24 of 2023 regarding summer and winter time. At midnight on Friday, the clocks will be adjusted forward by one hour, transitioning to 1:00 AM.

In addition to the adjustments in train schedules, there are also guidelines for individuals on how to change the time on their devices. For Android users, the process involves entering the phone's settings, selecting 'Additional settings', then 'Date & Time', adjusting the time and date to automatic, and restarting the device. For iPhone users, the steps include opening settings, selecting 'General', then 'Date & Time', and toggling the automatic setting on. Following these steps will ensure that the devices reflect the new daylight saving time accurately.

Meanwhile, in a separate but related development, Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly chaired a weekly government meeting to discuss various pressing matters. During this meeting, the Cabinet approved an increase in the value of grants for informal workers, which will now amount to 1,500 Egyptian pounds for six annual grants. This decision is part of the social protection measures that have been endorsed by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

The increase in grants for informal workers aims to provide essential support and care for this segment of the workforce, which has been particularly vulnerable to economic fluctuations. The decision aligns with the government’s broader strategy to enhance social safety nets and ensure that those who are not formally employed receive adequate assistance.

Prime Minister Madbouly emphasized the importance of these measures during the meeting, highlighting the government's commitment to improving the living conditions of informal workers. This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to address social inequalities and provide financial relief to those who may not have regular income sources.

As the government prepares to implement these changes, citizens are encouraged to stay informed about the new time regulations and the additional support available for informal workers. With the transition to daylight saving time and the increase in grants, the government aims to foster a more sustainable and supportive environment for all Egyptians.

Overall, the adjustments in both timekeeping and social support reflect the government’s proactive approach to managing resources and providing for its citizens. As Egypt moves forward into the summer months, these changes will play a crucial role in shaping the daily lives of individuals across the nation.
