The Egyptian government is embarking on significant developments for its marble and granite production, aiming to position itself as one of the leading exporters of these commodities within the Middle East. Mohamed Aref, the President of the Egyptian-Africa Association for Marble and Granite, highlighted key plans focusing on enhancing the industry through the development of the Schuq al-Thuban area, traditionally known for its marble quarrying.
"The development and improvement of the Schuq al-Thuban area is expected to yield enormous positive results," Aref stated, emphasizing the importance of this initiative for the regional and national economy. According to Aref, investments are being directed toward establishing comprehensive logistics facilities, ensuring not only production but also efficient distribution channels for exported materials.
One major step includes the establishment of a logistics area complete with shipping and unloading zones, which is projected to transform Schuq al-Thuban, giving it the capacity to attract both domestic and international investors. This initiative will significantly ease the shipping processes of marble and granite, cutting down waiting times and operational costs.
"The state is paying great attention to establishing a complete logistics area there," Aref remarked, explaining how such infrastructure developments would help create a competitive edge for Egyptian marble on the global market.
For years, Schuq al-Thuban has been a powerhouse for marble and granite production, supplying these stones to over 118 countries. The granite and marble extracted from local mountains are processed and shipped worldwide. With the new proposals, Egypt hopes to increase its exports to meet their ambitious yearly target of $1 billion.
Historically, this sector has faced neglect and underdevelopment, yet its potential has remained largely untapped. The area, once forgotten, is experiencing renewed governmental support, emphasizing the transformation of local business sectors, which can have substantial economic impacts.
By enhancing its infrastructure and focusing on best practices for the marble and granite industry, Egypt aims to leverage its geographical advantages and natural resources to boost its international market share. This bold approach constitutes not just growth for the marble industry but also development for ancillary industries, encompassing logistics and transportation.
The vision laid out by Aref and supported by governmental initiatives could redefine Egypt's role within the global marble and granite sector, turning challenges from the past onto opportunities for future growth.
