Easter Sunday Supermarket Hours Revealed For Shoppers

Most major supermarkets will be closed, but smaller stores remain open for emergencies.

As Easter Sunday approaches, many families are preparing for the holiday with festive meals and celebrations. However, those who find themselves in need of last-minute supplies may be in for a surprise as most major supermarkets across England will be closed on April 20, 2025, due to government regulations governing Easter Sunday trading.

For many, the Easter weekend is a time to relax and enjoy quality moments with loved ones. But for those who may have forgotten essential items during their big holiday shop, knowing which stores are open can be crucial. Fortunately, while larger supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons will be shuttered, several smaller stores will remain available to help with those unexpected needs.

According to reports, Tesco's larger stores, including Extra and Superstores, will be closed on Easter Sunday. However, most Tesco Express locations will operate as usual, providing a lifeline for those who need to grab a quick item. Shoppers are encouraged to check specific store hours on Tesco's website to confirm availability.

The Co-op is another option for those in need; almost all Co-op stores will remain open throughout the Easter weekend, with a few exceptions such as the Wallasey Village, Birkenhead Upton Road, Waterloo - Brighton Road, and Bromborough Allport Lane locations. Customers should verify their local store's hours for peace of mind.

Sainsbury’s follows a similar pattern, with regular and larger stores closed on Easter Sunday. Nevertheless, most Sainsbury’s Local stores will be open, allowing shoppers to pick up smaller items. Again, checking individual store hours is recommended.

ASDA's larger stores will also be closed for Easter Sunday, but its Express Petrol Station stores will remain open, albeit with limited stock. Morrisons has announced that while larger stores will not be operating, Morrisons Daily stores will be open as usual, providing another option for shoppers.

Unfortunately, Lidl and ALDI stores across England will be closed on Easter Sunday, leaving customers without access to these popular supermarkets. Large Marks and Spencer stores will also be closed, but some smaller locations may remain open, so it's advisable to check ahead.

For those who find themselves in dire need of supplies, smaller stores measuring up to and including 280 square meters are permitted to open under government regulations. This includes the Shell Petrol Station and Spar Shop on Bury Bolton Road, which opened in 2021 and offers a range of chilled and frozen foods, as well as a selection of beers, wines, and spirits.

The Spar store located on New Lane Breightmet will open at 8 am on Easter Sunday, providing another option for those in need. Additionally, several Morrisons Daily locations are expected to be operational, and details can be found on their website.

Sainsbury’s in Bromley Cross will be open from 7:30 am to 10:30 pm on April 20, providing ample time for last-minute shoppers. Similarly, Tesco Express locations in Brandlesholme and Bolton Road, Bury, will be open as usual, ensuring that customers have access to essential items.

Looking ahead to Easter Monday, many supermarkets will return to their regular operating hours. ASDA will be open from 7 am to 10 pm, while Aldi will welcome shoppers from 8 am to 8 pm. Iceland, however, will mostly be closed, with some branches inside shopping centers potentially offering different hours.

The Co-op will maintain its usual operating hours on Easter Monday, while Lidl will operate from 8 am to 10 pm inside the M25 and from 8 am to 8 pm outside the M25. Morrisons will be open from 7 am to 8 pm, and Sainsbury's will welcome customers from 8 am to 8 pm, although smaller convenience stores may have varying hours.

As for Tesco, Easter Monday hours will be from 8 am to 6 pm, with Express stores possibly differing in their schedules. Waitrose will be open from 8 am to 8 pm, while Marks and Spencer will operate under normal bank holiday hours.

With the holiday quickly approaching, shoppers are encouraged to plan ahead and check local store hours to ensure they can get everything they need for a festive Easter celebration. Whether it's a last-minute chocolate egg or ingredients for a family feast, knowing which stores are open can make all the difference.

In summary, while many larger supermarkets will be closed on Easter Sunday, smaller convenience stores and certain locations of Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons will provide essential services. Shoppers should take advantage of these openings to avoid any last-minute holiday stress.
