Easter Sunday Celebrations Draw Crowds At Canção Nova

Religious events and special market hours enhance Easter festivities across Brazil.

On April 20, 2025, Easter Sunday, religious celebrations and special events are set to draw large crowds at two prominent locations in Brazil: Canção Nova in Cachoeira Paulista and the National Shrine of Aparecida. Both sites are recognized as major pilgrimage destinations, particularly during significant liturgical dates like Easter, which is the most important day in the Christian calendar.

The day marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ, symbolizing triumph over death and the renewal of hope for believers. After a week of reflection and penitence during Holy Week, Easter Sunday is a day of joy and celebration for the Catholic Church, inviting Christians to bear witness to new life in the resurrected Christ.

At Canção Nova, the Easter festivities kick off at 9:00 AM with a mass and procession led by Father Wagner Ferreira. Following the mass, the program includes a series of chants and preachings throughout the day. Here’s the detailed schedule:

  • 9:00 AM: Santa Missa and procession (Pe. Wagner Ferreira)
  • 11:30 AM: Cânticos
  • 11:40 AM: Preaching with Pe. Ricardo Rodolfo Silva

  • 2:30 PM: Preaching with Frei Gilson
  • 4:00 PM: Adoration to the Blessed Sacrament with Frei Gilson and Pe. Sandro Magalhães
  • 6:00 PM: Santa Missa

Meanwhile, the National Shrine of Aparecida begins its Easter program even earlier. The schedule includes:

  • 5:30 AM: Missa
  • 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM: Procession of the Resurrection
  • 8:00 AM to 9:15 AM: Missa
  • 10:00 AM: Missa
  • 12:00 PM to 1:15 PM: Missa
  • 2:00 PM: Missa
  • 4:00 PM: Missa
  • 6:00 PM to 7:15 PM: Missa

These events are expected to attract participants from various regions, culminating the Paschal Triduum with moments of faith, praise, and devotion.

In addition to these religious celebrations, the Public Market of Porto Alegre has announced special operating hours for the extended Easter weekend and the Tiradentes holiday. On Saturday, April 19, the market will operate normally from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM. However, on Easter Sunday and the following Monday, businesses will have the option to open from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with restaurants serving from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This flexible schedule allows merchants to adapt to customer flow and business strategies while catering to the needs of both locals and tourists during this festive period.

The Public Market remains a cherished attraction in Porto Alegre, blending culture, gastronomy, and local commerce into a vibrant community hub. Visitors are encouraged to check in advance which establishments will be open to avoid any inconvenience.

As Easter Sunday unfolds, the energy of celebration and community will resonate through both the religious events at Canção Nova and the National Shrine of Aparecida, as well as the cultural offerings at the Public Market of Porto Alegre. Each venue plays a significant role in the spiritual and social fabric of Brazil, making this holiday a time for reflection, joy, and togetherness.
