As Easter approaches, many shoppers in Poland are preparing for the holiday by making last-minute purchases. With Good Friday falling on April 18, 2025, several retail chains have extended their opening hours to accommodate the increased demand for groceries and other essentials. This year, shoppers can expect a mix of standard and extended hours across various stores.
On Good Friday, Auchan stores will operate during their standard hours, typically from 6 AM or 7 AM until 10 PM. However, Auchan locations situated at gas stations will follow the hours of the gas station itself, which may vary. Biedronka, Poland's largest retail chain, has extended its hours and will remain open until 11:30 PM, although exact hours may differ by location.
Carrefour hypermarkets will close at 11 PM on Good Friday, while their supermarkets will stick to their usual hours, generally closing at 10 PM. Carrefour Express locations will also operate normally unless franchisees decide to extend their hours. Delikatesy Centrum stores will be open from 6 AM to 10 PM or 9 PM, depending on the location.
Dino has extended its opening hours, with stores open from 6 AM to 11 PM. E.Leclerc will maintain standard hours, closing at 9 PM or 10 PM. Most Kaufland stores will be open until 11 PM, operating between 6 AM and 11 PM, depending on the specific location. Lidl will not change its hours and will be open from 6 AM to 10 PM, while Netto has also extended its hours to 11 PM.
Polomarket stores will operate during standard hours, from 6:30 AM to 9 PM or 9:30 PM. Żabka will keep its usual hours, open from 6 AM to 11 PM. With all these options available, shoppers have ample opportunities to stock up before the holiday weekend.
Looking ahead, Holy Saturday, April 19, 2025, will see many stores adjusting their hours. Most supermarkets and hypermarkets will close earlier, generally by 1 PM or 2 PM, due to the law restricting trade on Sundays and holidays. Lidl, for example, will close at 1 PM, and shoppers are advised to check specific store hours online or through the Lidl Plus app.
After 2 PM on Holy Saturday, shopping will primarily be available at smaller neighborhood stores, franchise outlets like Żabka and ABC, as well as at gas stations, train stations, and airports, which typically remain open during holidays.
Easter Sunday, April 20, and Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, will be days without trading for most stores due to public holiday restrictions. On Easter Sunday, most shops will remain closed, with only a few Żabka, Carrefour Express, and Lewiatan locations open. Some neighborhood stores, pharmacies, cafes, restaurants, pubs, gas stations, cinemas, and museums may also be accessible.
As a reminder, the nearest trading Sunday will be April 27, 2025, marking the first of eight trading Sundays in 2025. The designated trading Sundays this year include January 26, April 13, April 27, June 29, August 31, December 7, December 14, and December 21.
Under the current law, shopping is prohibited on non-trading Sundays and public holidays, including significant dates such as New Year's Day, Epiphany, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday, among others. Violating the Sunday trading ban can result in fines ranging from 1,000 to 100,000 PLN, while persistent offenders may face imprisonment.
Despite the restrictions, some exceptions allow for shopping at gas stations, flower shops, pharmacies, animal treatment facilities, souvenir shops, and press and ticket outlets. Additionally, online shopping remains a viable option for consumers looking to make purchases during the holiday.
As the holiday weekend approaches, shoppers are encouraged to plan ahead and check store hours to ensure they can secure their Easter essentials. With a variety of options available on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, consumers can navigate the holiday shopping landscape effectively.
