A swarm of earthquakes hit the province of Valencia early Thursday, December 26, 2024, triggering mild tremors across several towns. According to the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), the most significant earthquake registered at 3.1 on the Richter scale, occurring at 11:44 AM near Senyera, at a depth of 2 kilometers.
The seismic activity began earlier, with the first reported quake at 10:11 AM, measuring 2.9, centered on Sumacàrcer. A subsequent tremor of magnitude 1.5 followed half an hour later, also near Sumacàrcer. The IGN confirmed sensations of this tremor by the local populace, even though emergency services reported no calls to 112 about the quakes.
“At 11:22 AM, another tremor hit Gavarda, measuring 2.1 and reaching its location four kilometers deep. The tremors were felt across various municipalities, including Alcàntera de Xúquer, where the largest subsequent quake of magnitude 3 occurred at 11:44 AM,” noted the IGN.
The local population felt the quakes most prominently, but no significant damages or injuries were reported. Residents from nearby towns, including Alberic, Carlet, and Xàtiva, also sensed the shaking, which measured between intensity levels 2 to 3 on the European Macroseismic Scale.
The Centro de Coordinación de Emergencias de la Generalitat Valenciana responded by initiating Situation 0 of the Special Plan against Seismic Risk to monitor the developments. The situation was categorized as alarming but manageable, as past seismic activity showed similar patterns.
“While these earthquakes may be alarming, it's important to note they are relatively common in the region. The area is known for its geological activity due to the friction between the African and Iberian plates,” explained Dr. Ana López, a seismologist. “The fact no severe damage has occurred is positive, indicating the quakes were low intensity.”
Residents reported minor inconveniences, like objects slightly shifting—examples of how low-magnitude earthquakes can create stirrings of fear but also highlight the need for preparedness. While immediate responses indicated tranquility, residents were encouraged to remain informed and vigilant about their safety protocols.
The IGN continues to watch the area closely, gathering data from its seismic observatory. They have provided citizens with a macrosismic questionnaire to report personal experiences during the quakes, contributing to future safety efforts by aiding data collection on the tremors.
“This feedback is indispensable for crafting accurate assessments and subsequent alerts, ensuring our readiness for the unexpected,” said Ignacio Pérez, director at IGN. “Collectively, the reports enrich our earthquake cataloging system, leading us to improve our response frameworks.”
