Earl Albert's Tribute Tree Lights Up Rockefeller Center

Family hopes for healing as 2024 Christmas tree honors late wife and mother during festive ceremony

This holiday season, the magical atmosphere of New York City will be heightened by the shining lights of the 2024 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, which will be lit on December 4. This year’s magnificent 74-foot tall Norway spruce has a special story behind it, touching the hearts of many as it was donated by Earl Albert, who wanted to honor his late wife, Leslie.

The couple took care of this tree since 1967, when they planted it together as newlyweds in their yard located in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Over the years, they witnessed its gradual growth, from its humble waist-high beginnings to the towering spruce it is today, perfect to inspire awe and delight the countless visitors who come to see it decorated each year. Earl recently shared, “We first used to decorate it when it was small, and then it got so big I couldn’t decorate it anymore.”

Sadly, not long ago, tragedy struck when Leslie passed away. This led Earl to reflect on their shared memories and realize he wanted to carry on her legacy. His son, Michael Albert, elaborated on this sentiment, expressing, “Honestly, it’s a tribute to my mom. It’s a new beginning for the tree. It’s also a new beginning for our family.” The tree’s fate, now intricately linked to their family story, is one of resilience, love, and remembrance.

Just days before Earl donated the tree, he experienced the sudden loss of Leslie, leaving him and his family heartbroken. It was at this time, he recounted, when Erik Pauze, who oversees the horticultural operations at Rockefeller Center, knocked on his door and offered them the opportunity to have their beloved tree serve as the centerpiece of one of the city's most cherished holiday traditions. Earl later remarked upon this meeting, stating, “This is definitely her handiwork,” highlighting how he believes Leslie would have been thrilled to see their tree celebrated.

Despite current challenges, such as Earl's recent stroke, the family remains hopeful. They shared through social media, “We thank everyone for their well wishes and thoughtful messages. Earl has been recovering from his stroke and is receiving great care. He looks forward to the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting and is working hard to attend it.” The community has rallied behind Earl, sending their love and encouragement, making it clear how impactful their story is amid the holiday hustle and bustle.

The tree was transported to Rockefeller Center on November 9, where it will soon be adorned with about 50,000 multi-colored LED lights and topped off with a dazzling three-dimensional star made from Swarovski crystals. This excitement is palpable not only among family and friends but also among onlookers who gather around the iconic spot year after year.

Now, as the lighting date approaches, there’s also talk of creating a memorial for Leslie right where the family had planted their tree together nearly sixty years ago. The commitment to honor her memory both around the holidays and beyond reveals just how deeply their love and joint history are woven with this significant tree.

Michael Albert asserted, “The fact it’s serving this greater purpose now is really significant to us. It’s nice to know her memory is being preserved.” This dedication exemplifies how even amid hardship, there’s strength to be found, turning sorrowful moments of loss and reflection back to the joyous, communal spirit of the holiday season.

Rockefeller Center’s tree lighting ceremony has long been heralded as the start of the festive season, drawing millions of visitors eager to witness the vibrant display of lights. This year, the ceremony will not only celebrate the holiday season but also the life of Leslie Albert and the enduring love shared through the years by the Albert family.

Those attending the ceremony will experience the warmth and joy of the holidays, envisioned through the sparkling branches of the Norway spruce. The path from West Stockbridge to Rockefeller Plaza is not just geographical but symbolic of their family's heartfelt narrative and the spirit of togetherness captured during this time of year.

The ceremony will be broadcast live, allowing millions at home to partake as the lights are switched on against the backdrop of the chilly New York City evening. It is moments like these when the true essence of Christmas shines through—the connections made, the love shared, and the memories cherished, making for stories worth telling not only during the holidays but throughout the year.

With all this excitement, the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree promises to be more than just the flick of lights; it embodies hope, remembrance, and rebirth, characteristics echoed by Earl Albert’s poignant donations and personal reflections. The community, familial bonds, and festive joy will all blend seamlessly, reminding us of the season’s spirit, ensuring the holiday season begins with love, honor, and light.
