Dynamic Trio Shine In New Film Last Song For You

Ekin Cheng, Ian Chan, and Natalie Hsu explore youth and regret through powerful performances.

Actors Ekin Cheng, Ian Chan, and Natalie Hsu shine in the new film "Last Song for You", where they traverse the delicate themes of youth, regret, and artistic aspiration. The film features Ekin Cheng and Ian Chan sharing the role of Su Shenghua, with Cheng representing the adult version and Chan stepping back as the young protagonist. Natalie Hsu, at just 20 years old, makes her mark playing the pivotal role of the young female lead.

During interviews, both Cheng and Chan expressed admiration for each other's talents. Cheng shared his desire to emulate Chan's musical skills: "What I hope to gain from Ian is his ability to play the guitar, sing, and compose. Writing and performing one's own music is the purest form of artistic expression." Chan, on the other hand, looks up to Cheng's enduring mindset, saying, "Having entered the industry just a few years ago, my perspective is still changing, and I want to understand how my senior continues to thrive and achieve such impressive accomplishments."

Reflecting on their character's traits, Cheng noted the similarities between his younger self and Chan's interpretation: "I think he captures my earlier persona quite well—reserved and quiet. I used to be like him, often not speaking much, rarely obliging the media to elaborate. But just like Ian, I have become more vocal with time."

Speaking of their roles, the film addresses feelings of regret, which Cheng claims is redeemable. "I don't really think I have too many regrets. Even if they exist, they contribute to who I am today," he stated. "But even small regrets can shape one's path, such as wishing I had learned the piano seriously instead of abandoning lessons after losing some money during payments. Looking back, it feels like I missed out, but I grew and learned from it."

Chan echoed this sentiment, reminiscing about lost opportunities during childhood: "My biggest regret was having left school to film my first movie, which meant I couldn't graduate alongside friends who I had known for years. I often envisioned celebrating our graduation together, but I missed the chance. That felt regretful."

It's not only regrets but also the challenge of maintaining enthusiasm for their craft. Cheng emphasized the importance of growth and adaptation. "If one becomes indifferent to their work, they should rethink their approach. I've always believed work should be enjoyable and approached creatively. I want to explore different genres; that's far more stimulating than just repeating past roles. I worry about being apathetic toward my craft."

Both Cheng and Chan are poised to bring fresh energy to their roles. Chan revealed he's grateful not to have yet faced significant creative blocks, though he acknowledged feeling at his lows at times. "While I haven't personally hit rock bottom, I recognize their pressure and how mentality influences outlook. The industry dynamics have certainly presented challenges, but there's room for unique personalities within—it’s okay to embrace one's introversion," he remarked.

The film's expectations weren't solely on them. Hsu, portraying the ambitious character who inspires both leads, expressed the pressure of living up to her role. "I feel obligated to uplift everyone's spirits and sometimes impose too much pressure on myself to maintain energy. I strive to be authentic and showcase my true self—no pretense, just honesty... it’s liberative to express oneself freely."

Regarding the actors' hopes for exchanging strengths with one another, they both showed interest. Cheng indicated he would want Chan's music capability as they discussed his character's arrival at adulthood: "To sing and compose is pivotal. If I could write my song and convey my thoughts, that's true artistry."

Chan reflected on what he admired most deeply about Cheng: "I wish to embrace his attitude and longevity. Few can maintain their purity through such years, which is remarkable. It teaches me to remain true to oneself, especially through the ups and downs of this life. That lesson is invaluable and inspired me daily."

Overall, "Last Song for You" expectedly explores complex emotions dealing with loss, aspiration, and love, reflecting the actors' paths—both real-life and on-screen—as they navigate their young and older selves. Having intertwined personal stories with the film's themes, the movie promises to resonate with audiences on multiple levels, capturing both heart and artistry.
