Dutch Royals Embrace Argentine Spirit This Holiday Season

Queen Máxima and her family celebrate Christmas and New Year at their luxury retreat near Bariloche.

The Dutch Royal Family, headed by Queen Máxima Zorreguieta and King Willem-Alexander, made their way to Argentina to celebrate Christmas and the New Year this season. Arriving on December 21, 2024, the family is enjoying the breathtaking landscapes of Patagonia, particularly at Estancia Pilpilcura, their luxury retreat located 75 kilometers from Bariloche.

After landing at the international airport of El Calafate, the royal family embraced the natural beauty of the region with plans to spend the holidays immersed in tranquility away from the rigorous protocols usually associated with royal life. During their stay, they made gestures of humility and togetherness, connecting with the local environment. A highlight of their trip was hiking on the stunning Perito Moreno glacier—a majestic sight renowned for its vast ice formations and breathtaking views of the surrounding nature.

On December 24, the family traveled to Bariloche, where they settled at the Estancia Pilpilcura, which boasts luxurious accommodations and is surrounded by pristine wilderness. This elegant mansion, shared by Máxima and her siblings since 2009, sits right on the banks of the Pichileufú River. Spanning 3,000 hectares, the estate is equipped with everything necessary for upscale comfort balanced with the rustic appeal of the Argentine wilderness.

Estancia Pilpilcura features five exquisitely decorated rooms, offering stunning views, artisanal textiles, and native wooden designs. Guests are welcomed to enjoy lavish comforts along with nearby natural excursions. The royal family spent the following days comfortably enthralled by Mother Nature, planning peaceful days filled with family, hikes, gourmet meals, and reflections on the year past.

While there, the family took advantage of the charming backdrop, participating in local festivities and engaging with the area's culture. It’s reported, for example, they had quality time exploring the national parks and reveling under the warm Argentine sun, which surely felt foreign to them during the winter back home.

On Christmas, Queen Máxima and King Willem-Alexander shared heartfelt holiday wishes with their followers. This year, they sent their greetings far and wide, presenting their joyous message “Una Navidad bendita y un saludable y próspero 2025” translated and expressed across five languages—Spanish marking Queen Máxima’s Argentine roots among the multilingual audience. Besides Dutch and English, they also included Frisian and Papiamento, reflecting the diverse linguistic connection of their subjects back home.

With plans to remain at their luxurious estancia until mid-January, the family managed to steal away even more personal moments before returning to the busyness of royal duties and obligations. It’s rumored they are expecting the arrival of Carmen Cerrutti, Máxima's mother, who might join them for New Year’s celebrations, adding to the warmth and togetherness typical during this festive time.

The family is ensconced at Estancia Pilpilcura, recognized not only for its natural beauty but also for the intimacy it offers, allowing them to forge even closer ties. The property harmoniously combines luxury living with the authentic nature of the Argentine terrain, offering elegance without undermining the wild spirit of the rugged landscapes outside.

Local media have highlighted the royal family’s inclination to escape prying eyes, allowing for more intimate moments, particularly among family. While they often vacation at such exquisite places, their real connection seems to arise from the simplicity offered by nature at its best—a season worth cherishing.

Besides enjoying the sunny summer days filled with exploration, the royal family undoubtedly reflects upon the meaningful moments from 2024 and the aspirations for the New Year. With the holiday festivities still underway, it is clear their Argentine escapade will remain etched as one of those memorable experiences, taking their hearts back with them to Europe as they celebrate the close of another year and embrace what lies ahead.

Indeed, the significance of this holiday gathering resonates deeply with the Royal Family of the Netherlands, illustrating not only their cultural ties but also the personal depth with which they honor their Argentine heritage.
