Dubai And Saudi Arabia Race To Build Iconic Skyscrapers

Ambitious projects like Burj Azizi and Jeddah Tower aim for heights never seen before

Dubai and Saudi Arabia are not just the jewel of the Middle East; they are rapidly transforming their skylines with ambitious projects and breathtaking architectural feats. With numerous skyscrapers under construction, each aiming to outdo the other, these nation-states are poised to be the talk of the real estate world.

One of the most iconic projects on the horizon is the Burj Azizi, which is set to rise to impressive heights. Currently underway on Sheikh Zayed Road, the 725-meter-tall Burj Azizi will not only take the crown as the second tallest building globally upon completion but also feature the world’s highest hotel room, restaurant, and observation deck. Developers at Azizi Developments have invested over AED 6 billion, emphasizing their commitment to creating not just another building but rather a landmark destination for both residents and tourists alike. Construction officially started back in January 2024, making it one of the most talked-about projects on the dice for its extraordinary scale and vision.

The Burj Azizi is geared to become more than just office or living spaces; it encompasses 131 floors which will host luxurious hotels, apartments, and commercial facilities including shopping malls. Mirwais Azizi, the founder of Azizi Developments, expressed his aspirations for Burj Azizi as embodying Dubai’s dynamic skyline: “My vision for Burj Azizi is to create a lasting legacy, a tribute to Dubai as a destination of choice for both residents and visitors.” Completing its construction by 2028, the tower will be located just over three kilometers from the world-renowned Burj Khalifa, which stands majestically at 828 meters. Though the Burj Khalifa remains unrivaled, the Burj Azizi is undeniably set to become another crown jewel for Dubai.

Meanwhile, the increasingly competitive architectural scene doesn’t stop at just Dubai. The ambitious Tiger Sky Tower is being developed nearby and is set to break five world records when it opens. Aspiring to house the highest infinity pool and the tallest zip line at 447 meters high, this tower promises to push the envelope of what’s architecturally possible, giving Burj Azizi quite the competition. This glass edifice will also host a rainforest, making it uniquely immersive.

Shifting gears to neighboring Saudi Arabia, the country is adding to its list of remarkable constructions with the resumption of work on the world's tallest tower, the Jeddah Tower. Initially announced back in 2011, the project is now breathing new life as Saudi Binladin Group resumed its activity earlier this year. Expected to reach approximately 1,000 meters, the Jeddah Tower aims to break several records by hosting the world’s highest observation deck and hospitality services.

When it eventually opens, this monumental structure will dwarf its rivals and is expected to solidify Saudi Arabia’s reputation as the home of megastructures. Its design establishes thoughtful integration with its surrounding environment. While the tower itself is central to the district, the adjacent area will also feature spaces for shopping, dining, and public transport.

Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia is making breakthroughs with developments like the NEOM project, anticipated to blur the lines between nature and technology. NEOM aims to create smart cities interconnected with sustainable ecosystems, heralding innovative urban living, with smart homes, transportation, and other facilities, reflective of the city of the future.

Back to Dubai, the Franck Muller Vanguard Tower is another noteworthy project to hit the skyline. A collaboration between London Gate and Swiss luxury watchmaker Franck Muller, this venture is valued at around $435 million and is expected to house 722 high-end residential units. The design takes inspiration from the brand’s iconic timepieces, blending luxury with modern living, and aims at attracting investors focusing on Dubai's short-term rental market.

The Franck Muller Vanguard Tower will encompass 34 floors, with residences including studio and three-bedroom apartments customized for opulence. Each unit is thoroughly equipped with appliances and stylish furnishings, ensuring residents enjoy high-class urban living. Eman Taha, CEO of London Gate, stated the partnership emphasizes creating living experiences reflecting both branding and sophisticated living.

Real estate developments aren't the only focus for these countries; the entertainment sector is also taking significant leaps. Dubai recently unveiled plans for air taxi infrastructure, which aims to offer transportation solutions intertwined with advanced technology and convenience. Partnerships between various firms for this futuristic service are under way, indicating Dubai’s commitment to innovatively shaping its transportation ecosystem.

Overall, the transformation of these skyline projects indicates not only economic ambitions but also cultural aspirations. These countries are defining themselves through towering developments, affording them not only breathtaking views but also global recognition of their capabilities.

Investments continue to flow, with projects worth billions being orchestrated, indicating both Dubai and Saudi Arabia's readiness to host visitors inspired by awe-inspiring architectural feats. Who knows what the future holds; as more skyscrapers rise, so too will opportunities for both investment and tourism. It’s certainly great to witness this architectural race transform the culturally rich and vibrant regions of the Middle East.
