Drivers Urged To Prepare For Winter Conditions In Serbia

Auto-Moto Union emphasizes need for winter tires amid snowy road conditions and urges caution for drivers.

As Serbia braces for seasonal changes, the Auto-Moto Union of Serbia (AMSS) is urging drivers to prepare for the winter conditions expected across the country. In a statement, AMSS highlights the necessity of having winter tires installed for all vehicles from November 1st to April 1st, when snow, ice, or black ice may be present on the roads. Violating this crucial requirement could lead to fines ranging from 10,000 to 800,000 dinars.

“Under the Road Safety Law, if there are snowy, icy, or slushy conditions on the roadway, drivers must have all four winter tires,” AMSS spokesperson has advised. The organization emphasizes that these regulations are put in place to ensure the safety of all road users during a challenging season.

Current traffic conditions report moderate intensity across Serbian highways, although some areas may experience slower movement due to ongoing roadwork. Fortunately, the latest information from Public Company “Roads of Serbia” indicates that there are no significant vehicle delays at toll stations, allowing drivers relatively smooth passage as they navigate the network.

The winter service of “Roads of Serbia” has issued warnings, noting the presence of up to five centimeters of snow on high-traffic routes. These priority routes include the main thoroughfares like Uzice – Cajetina – Nova Varos, traveling towards the border with Montenegro, with additional coverage along roads to and from Prijepolje.

In less demanding regions, road surfaces remain wet, but drivers are advised to exercise caution when driving during this wintertime. Areas around Uzice report places where snow has turned to slush, particularly on state roads of priority II and III in Krusevac, Cacak, and Ivanjica. Here, snow can be found in compacted conditions where depth reaches approximately five centimeters.

As families prepare to travel during the weekend, a review of border crossings indicates no significant delays on passenger terminals. However, freight vehicles face waiting times; for instance, vehicles at the Kelebija crossing queue for up to 300 minutes, while those leaving through the Gradina, Batrovci, and Sremska Raca crossings can expect modalities anywhere from 120 to 360 minutes.

“At our passenger terminals, there are currently no ongoing delays,” confirms a representative from the Border Police Directorate of the Republic of Serbia, reflecting the authorities' efforts to maintain smooth border experiences despite the seasonal rush.

Travelers are reminded to stay informed and ensure they are following the latest regulations regarding winter preparations and road safety guidance as the winter season unfolds.
