Drew Brees Returns To Broadcasting On Netflix For Christmas Gameday

The former quarterback aims to make his mark with expert insights alongside star-studded hosts.

Drew Brees is back on the broadcasting scene, stepping up to the mic for Netflix’s highly anticipated NFL Christmas Gameday presentation set for December 25, 2024. The former New Orleans Saints quarterback is determined to make this event the first step on his comeback tour, as fans and critics alike await to see if he can reclaim the success he once had as a broadcaster.

Following his retirement from the NFL, Brees quickly became one of the hottest commodities in broadcasting. His initial stint with NBC, touting him as one of the network’s leading analysts, ended abruptly after just one year due to mixed reviews of his performances. Despite not returning to the NBC booth, Brees is setting his eyes on redemption. His recent appearances, including on ESPN's Monday Night Countdown, have sparked renewed interest and opportunities for the former Super Bowl MVP.

Reflecting on his experiences, Brees expressed confidence about his broadcasting potential, saying, “I feel like I found myself on every side of the game now... I love the game. I love talking about the game... I think broadcasting, especially primetime games, is where I think we can really provide some incredible insight.” He aims to bring his unique perspective as someone who has played the quarterback position at the highest level, hoping to offer fans insights they can’t get from anyone else.

The excitement surrounding Brees is not unfounded. His former teammate, Jonathan Vilma, who has successfully transitioned to broadcasting, has publicly supported Brees’ comeback. Vilma, who has been calling games for the past five seasons, advised Brees to stay relaxed and embrace imperfections. “Just go out, be natural, be relaxed... If you mess something up, who cares?” he said, encouraging Brees to enjoy the experience for the three-hour block of football.

Brees’ dedication to excellence remains unwavering. His attention to detail and commitment to analyzing tape has defined his career as both player and analyst. “You don’t become one of the greatest quarterbacks ever without a detailed approach to the game,” Vilma noted, adding weight to Brees’ knowledge and likelihood of success in broadcasting.

Aside from Brees, Netflix has curated an impressive lineup for its NFL Christmas Gameday broadcast. The event, featuring noteworthy hosts such as Kay Adams, Robert Griffin III, Mina Kimes, and Manti Te'o, will kick off with pre-game coverage at 11 a.m. EST from two studio locations: Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. The pre-show promises to deliver humor alongside expert insights and analysis, setting the stage for the games to follow.

Kay Adams, well-known for her engaging sports commentary, will lead the Los Angeles studio. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh crew, comprising Laura Rutledge and former NFL stars Devin and Jason McCourty, will provide game-day analysis with their storied on-field experiences. This model reflects Netflix's ambition to reimagine how sports can integrate entertainment not just for existing fans but also for new audiences.

Once the kickoff commences, fans can expect brilliant play-by-play commentary from CBS Sports’ Ian Eagle and NBC’s Noah Eagle. They will be joined by color commentators like Nate Burleson and JJ Watt, who will interject their charisma and analysis to keep viewers engaged throughout the game.

This year's Christmas Gameday is set to deliver more than just football. Beyoncé will take center stage for the highly anticipated halftime show, injecting glitz and glamour to the holiday football tradition. This blend of sports, comedy, and music marks Netflix’s commitment to making this inaugural event memorable and culturally significant.

With programming like the NFL Christmas Gameday, Netflix is redefining how fans engage with sports. This event not only signifies competition on the football field but also heightens entertainment's role during the holidays, establishing this NFL installment as one for the ages. Brees’ involvement proposes hopes of new beginnings and future success, as he steps back onto the broadcast stage ready to engage audiences like never before.

Fans are eagerly waiting to see how this fusion of football and festivities will transform their viewing experience this Christmas. Will Brees find his footing and secure future broadcasting opportunities? With the rise of streaming networks entering the sports arena, it certainly looks like he’ll have many chances.”
