Drake Sues Universal Music Over Kendrick Lamar's Diss Track

The Canadian rapper alleges defamation, linking violence to UMG's promotion of Lamar's 'Not Like Us'.

Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s long-standing feud has escalated dramatically, drawing public attention and courtroom challenges. The conflict, which has spanned over years, recently took another turn when Drake filed a lawsuit against his record label, Universal Music Group (UMG), alleging defamation and harassment connected to Lamar’s diss track, "Not Like Us."

The lawsuit, filed on January 15, 2024, claims UMG collaborated with Lamar to promote false allegations. According to Drake's legal team, the rapper asserts, "Not Like Us" falsely accuses him of being a pedophile and incites violent retribution against him. Drake is seeking punitive, compensatory, and nominal damages, as well as declarations to counteract the track's statements.

Particularly concerning for Drake are the allegations contained within the lyrics, which include incendiary claims about his character. The lawsuit also highlights violent incidents allegedly spurred by the song's release. On May 7, 2024, armed assailants attacked Drake’s Toronto home, injuring his security guard. Another break-in attempt was reported just the following day.

Drake, who is signed to UMG's Republic Records, argues, "Beginning May 4, 2024 and every day since, UMG has used its massive resources to promote dangerous and inflammatory messages against me, leading to real threats on my life." The timing of the lawsuit coincides with the heightened publicity of Lamar’s track, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and won multiple Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year.

Lamar’s track provoked strong reactions, not only due to its promotion by UMG but also because of its lyrical content. Lamar raps derogatory lines such as, "Say, Drake, I hear you like 'em young/ You best not ever go to cell block one," categorizing Drake as "a certified pedophiles." Legal experts predict significant repercussions from this battle, not just for the artists involved but for the entire music industry.

While Drake’s formidable legal actions might be aimed squarely at UMG, he has been vocal about the broader issues of corporate interests outweighing artist safety. His legal team emphasized, "This lawsuit reveals the human and business consequences of UMG’s elevation of profits over artist welfare."

UMG has firmly countered Drake's allegations, characterizing his lawsuit as "illogical" and asserting they have invested significantly in his career. The label's response included claims of adherence to ethical promotional practices. Drake's accusations were met with hostility, noting, "He now seeks to weaponize the legal process to silence artist expression," the label’s statement read.

This legal drama is only the latest chapter in the Drake-Lamar saga, which has been simmering since 2013, when Lamar called out several rappers, including Drake, on the track "Control." Their rivalry intensified with various jabs and diss tracks from both sides, culminating with Lamar's recent guest verses igniting the feud anew. Both artists capitalized on each other's presence, with competing tracks strengthening their grip on the charts.

The latest developments sparked not just industry discussion but also divided public sentiment, with many fans taking sides. Recently, K’Andre Miller's girlfriend, Addison Clark, publicly sided with Drake, stating, "The pretty girls know to never switch on Drake. HE IS FOR THE GIRLIES.” Her TikTok nods to the palpable tension within hip-hop circles as fans and other artists align themselves within the Drake or Lamar camps.

The feud appears to have reached new heights as both artists continue to generate headlines and chart-topping hits. The public, too, seems more engaged than ever, turning to social media to express their loyalties and reactions. With the controversy now spilling over to legal issues, observers are questioning whether this feud may have far-reaching effects on the careers of both rappers and the industry at large.

Much remains uncertain as this feud continues to unravel. What can be said with certainty is this: the rivalry between Drake and Kendrick Lamar has brought with it not only powerful music but also societal debates surrounding violence, publicity, and the ethics of corporate accountability. The battle lines are drawn, with fans eagerly anticipating the next moves from both rappers as they navigate this contentious chapter.
