Dovista Expands Footprint By Acquiring Swiss Window Producer 4B

The acquisition enhances Dovista's growth strategy and retains operations in Hochdorf, Switzerland.

Dovista, the Danish window manufacturer, has announced its acquisition of Swiss company 4B, marking a significant step toward bolstering its presence in the European market. This acquisition is pending approval from the Swiss Competition Commission and is one of the latest moves by Dovista to expand its operations, having previously acquired another Swiss window manufacturer, Arbonia, for 350 million francs.

Founded 130 years ago, 4B has its roots as part of the Bachmann family’s carpentry legacy and has since grown to operate with 11 locations across Switzerland, employing approximately 650 individuals, of which 500 are based at its Hochdorf site. The acquisition announcement on Thursday highlighted Dovista's strategy to leverage 4B’s established reputation and manufacturing capabilities.

According to Jean-Marc Devaud, CEO of 4B, "Mit dem Verkauf nimmt 4B seine unternehmerische Verantwortung wahr und regelt seine Unternehmensnachfolge umsichtig. Es eröffnen sich spannende Wachstumsperspektiven." (Translation: "With the sale, 4B takes its corporate responsibility and manages its succession prudently. Exciting growth prospects are opening up.") This comment reflects the envisioned opportunities Dovista believes it can exploit within Switzerland and beyond.

Notably, Dovista is part of the VKR Holding group, one of the largest production conglomerates based in Denmark, employing over 17,000 people across 38 countries. Its strategic positioning aims to develop, produce, and sell windows and exterior doors mainly for Scandinavian and Northern European markets, emphasizing high-quality standards and innovative design.

The competitive nature of the window industry, characterized by tight margins and intense competition, is not lost on 4B. The firm has faced challenges but remains committed to its legacy and operational integrity. The acquisition will see 4B continue to operate as an independent entity under the Dovista umbrella, preserving its brand identity and employee structure.

The commitment to retain production facilities in Hochdorf will also resonate well with the local workforce and community, as Devaud mentioned, "Die Produktion verbleibt in Hochdorf, das dürfte auch den Kanton Luzern freuen, 4B ist einer der wichtigsten Arbeitgeber." (Translation: "Production will remain in Hochdorf, which will also please the Canton of Lucerne, as 4B is one of the most important employers.")

To strengthen its production capabilities, 4B is currently investing 35 million francs to expand its facilities. This includes the installation of new machines, particularly the core of window manufacturing processes, along with building four new halls spanning approximately 9,000 square meters and investing in renewable energy solutions to support sustainable growth.

Such moves are indicative of 4B's aspirations to optimize its production processes and maintain its competitive edge. This strategic plan aligns with Dovista’s ambitions of capturing increased market share, fostering innovation, and ensuring operational efficiency.

The acquisition marks not only an important milestone for Dovista and 4B but also signals potential positive economic impacts for the region. With the employment and production remaining intact, local communities have reasons to be optimistic about the future.

While the deal is still awaiting regulatory scrutiny, the foundations being laid through this acquisition speak volumes about Dovista's commitment to the Swiss market and its strategic goals. This merger could set the stage for potentially exploring new markets and technologies, enhancing the initiatives already present within the Swiss window manufacturing sector.

Overall, the acquisition of 4B by Dovista serves as both a strategic growth maneuver for the Danish business and a positive development for the established Swiss manufacturer, promising continued operation and growth within one of the country's key industrial sectors.
