Double Demerit Points Begin Amid Holiday Traffic Crackdown

NSW, ACT, and WA increase penalties to improve road safety during the festive season.

With the holiday season approaching, drivers across New South Wales (NSW), the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and Western Australia (WA) are being warned of increased penalties for traffic violations as double demerit points come back this Christmas. Starting at midnight on December 20, 2024, and lasting until January 1, 2025, motorists will face double demerits for certain infractions, reflecting the authorities' commitment to road safety during one of the busiest travel times of the year.

During this crackdown, drivers caught speeding, illegally using mobile phones, or failing to wear seat belts will see their punishment effectively doubled. The same applies to motorcycle helmet violations. The ACT has similar regulations, with the added stipulation of one extra demerit point for other offenses, underscoring the seriousness of this holiday enforcement period.

Western Australia is keeping the pressure on too; not only does it issue double demerit points for traditional offenses like speeding and using mobile phones, but it also has strict measures against running red lights. Offenders caught driving vehicles equipped with devices to evade speed cameras will risk receiving as many as 14 demerit points—a significant legal blow for any driver.

These intensified measures come at a time when the state authorities are particularly alert. According to Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Tracy Chapman, "Our traffic enforcement activities seek to encourage all road users to reach their destinations safely, and I urge people to reconsider the impacts of irresponsible behavior - which can change lives forever." The sentiment is echoed by statistics showing alarming increases in road fatalities across various regions: the ACT has reported a staggering 266.7% increase, with 11 road deaths, whereas NSW saw 350 deaths—a 4.5% rise—during the same period.

The strategy of employing double demerit points during the holiday season is not uniform across all Australian territories. For example, Queensland opts for year-round double demerits, but only applies them for drivers committing the same infraction twice within 12 months. This added twist means motorists can face double penalties for reckless behaviors any time of the year, regardless of where the infractions occur, making it one of the most stringent policies.

Meanwhile, states like South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory will not impose double demerit points over the holiday season. Critics argue this could weaken road safety measures as these regions lack the same deterrent effects other territories are implementing.

Despite differing regulations, the focus remains shared across jurisdictions—keeping the roads safe at this perilous time. Families are known to travel across borders for celebrations, the risks associated with increased traffic volumes and sometimes reckless behavior become evident. Police forces are prepared for extensive enforcement, hoping to cut down on the number of accidents and fatalities.

The double demerit scheme reflects the shared priority across authorities: reducing the risks of serious road incidents. "The risk of not just fines but the loss of demerit points should deter people from breaking the law, yet the ultimate goal is to protect lives on our roads," Chapman stated. With the recent spike of fatalities during holiday periods, these new policies aim to influence driver behavior positively and remind them of the pressing need for caution.

New South Wales first introduced the double demerit point system to curb high-risk behaviors during peak travel periods. Over the years, it has been modified to adapt to growing concerns about road safety and rising accidents. These recent policies mark another iteration aimed squarely at safeguarding lives but also remind drivers of the consequences of their actions.

Therefore, as December approaches, all drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to traffic rules. Whether it’s avoiding using mobile phones or ensuring seat belts are fastened, every action counts as road safety becomes everyone's responsibility. Drivers should be aware of the penalties they might face risk if they choose to disregard the law this festive season.

Overall, increased enforcement measures, such as double demerit points, can play a significant role in reducing road incidents. Risks are rampant during the holiday season, and authorities are taking proactive measures to discourage potentially dangerous driving has to remain top of mind for all. Making responsible decisions behind the wheel could mean the difference between life and death this Christmas.
