In Dortmund, a vibrant celebration is underway as the DORTBUNT Festival kicks off, bringing together music, culture, and community from May 2 to May 4, 2025. This year marks the festival's eighth edition, expanding to three days of festivities that promise to engage visitors of all ages.
The festival opened on Friday evening with a spectacular free concert by pop star Max Giesinger on Friedensplatz, where he performed in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 8,000 people. Known for his hit songs like “80 Millionen” and “Wenn sie tanzt,” Giesinger also introduced his new track, “Butterfly Effect,” much to the delight of his fans. As he captivated the audience with his engaging performance, the old town hall was illuminated with a stunning "Fassadenmapping" that told a three-dimensional story of Dortmund's past and present.
On Saturday, the excitement continues with DJ Topic taking the stage, promising to energize the crowd on Friedensplatz. The festival is not just about music; it offers a diverse array of activities and performances across seven stages in the city center. Families can enjoy workshops, including graffiti and drum computer sessions in the Stadtgarten, while the Tiefgarage Westentor hosts a roller disco for added fun.
Among the innovative formats introduced this year is DORTBUNT.live, taking place at the Alten Markt. Here, engaging discussions and entertainment centered around Dortmund's vibrant life will feature guests from various fields, including sports, culture, and science. This initiative aims to provide insights into the rich tapestry of experiences that define the city.
Football fans have plenty to look forward to as well. The festival includes three special BVB highlights, where the renowned football podcast “Viertelstunde Fussball,” hosted by Kevin Großkreutz, will be recorded live. Additionally, BVB mascot Emma will make an appearance, and the BVB women's handball team will share their experiences on the experience stage over the weekend.
Further engaging the local sports community, the Nordstadtliga will host a competition in collaboration with the Dortmund fan project at Hiroshima Square. The Fußballmuseum will also be present, offering exciting programs centered around the sport.
As the festival unfolds, visitors can also enjoy a comedy and cabaret program organized by local cultural centers, scheduled for Sunday on the Hansaplatz stage. For younger attendees, the Dortmunder U will feature free activities throughout the family day, ensuring that all age groups are catered to.
In addition to the main events, smaller activities will create a festive atmosphere throughout the city. The neighborhood festival DORTBUNT.nebenan invites everyone to discover the diversity of Dortmund, reflecting the community spirit that the festival aims to promote.
Dortmund's Mayor, Thomas Westphal, emphasized the festival's significance in fostering openness, respect, and community. "DORTBUNT stands for openness, respect, and community. This year, we are sending a clear signal against exclusion and hate – and for a Dortmund where everyone is welcome," he stated. The festival serves not only as a celebration of music and entertainment but also as a powerful message of solidarity within the city.
As the DORTBUNT Festival continues through the weekend, it promises to be a memorable event, showcasing the best of Dortmund's culture and community spirit. With free concerts, engaging workshops, and lively discussions, there's something for everyone to enjoy. The festival not only highlights the city's rich cultural scene but also reinforces its commitment to inclusivity and community cohesion.
