Two ambitious fundraising events are set to galvanize the Dorset community, bringing together individuals striving to make a difference. The events, which include seven back-to-back marathons and the Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge, aim to support local charities, namely the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation (DCCF) and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.
First up is the monumental marathon challenge. Commencing on March 10, 2025, Chris Helberg and Chris Bryer-Ash will run seven consecutive marathons within just seven days, covering a total distance of 183.4 miles. Their run will begin at Sandbanks, Poole, winding through renowned towns such as Dorchester, Wareham, and Sturminster Newton, before culminating at Bournemouth Pier on March 16. The devoted duo hopes to raise over £20,000 for the DCCF, which provides financial assistance to local residents battling the financial hardships triggered by cancer.
Helberg shares, “Many people in my family have been affected by cancer. My mum Eve Went, who is a co-founder of the DCCF, has been through cancer three times. She helped set up the charity to help Dorset families suffering intense financial hardship because of the disease.” He adds, “Completing this challenge won’t beat cancer, but if we can make a small difference, it’s absolutely worth doing.” Their determination is evident, as Helberg recounted recently training uphill for the equivalent of one marathon to prepare for this ambitious goal.
“We have launched our JustGiving page, and it has been so inspiring to see money being donated, along with many messages of encouragement,” he remarked, expressing gratitude toward supporters. Chris Bryer-Ash echoed this sentiment, stating, “We hope even more people will come forward and sponsor us, knowing every penny we raise will go straight to families here in Dorset who are struggling because of cancer diagnoses.”
Helberg’s mother, Eve Went, expressed her initial concern about the physical toll such challenge could take on the two friends but quickly noted, “Knowing them both as I do, I have no doubt of their determination, and I am immensely proud and excited to see them achieve this for the DCCF and the local families we help.” With the rising cost of living, she highlighted, “The work of the DCCF has never been so important.” The charity has provided over £750,000 through non-returnable grants since its launch, and the demand for support continues to grow.
Meanwhile, another avenue to raise funds is fast approaching—the Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge, which will be held on May 10, 2025. Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, this cycling event allows participants to choose from two picturesque routes. Cyclists can opt for either a challenging 55-mile route starting from Watchet Harbour or a more leisurely 11-mile option beginning at the Royal Oak pub in Drimpton, both converging at the scenic finish line of West Bay.
Alana Hardy, events officer for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, expressed her excitement about the event, stating, “Our Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge has become a firm favourite over the years, and we’re so proud to see how it brings people together from all walks of life.” She emphasizes the importance of this year’s event, noting, “Every mission we undertake is funded by you, so every pedal stroke and every pound raised will help us to be there today, tomorrow and for many years to come.”
The entry fee for the 55-mile route is set at £40 for adults and £20 for under-16s, whereas the shorter, 11-mile trek costs £20 for adults and £10 for under-16s. Each cyclist is encouraged to secure at least £50 through sponsorship.
Both events highlight the strength and tenacity within the Dorset community, with the ambition to support families coping with cancer and the need for emergency medical services. Residents are encouraged to contribute to these noble endeavors—either by participating, sponsoring, or donating directly. The camaraderie built around such challenges not only strengthens local ties but also brings hope to those who need it most.
The marathon runners’ efforts can be tracked on Instagram at @7marathons7days_, and donations can be made via their JustGiving page. For those interested in joining the cycling challenge, registrations are live, with spots available on both routes.
Through their endeavor, both Chris Helberg, Chris Bryer-Ash and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance aim to inspire people to come together for meaningful causes, emphasizing how collective action can light up lives—one step, one pedal at a time.
