Doraemon Dominates Japanese Box Office Again

Disney's Snow White and Other New Films Debut in Top Ten.

In the world of cinema, the latest movie rankings have revealed that Doraemon the Movie: Nobita's Picture Book World Story continues its reign at the top of Japan's box office for the third consecutive week. As reported on March 21-23, 2025, the beloved animated film has captivated audiences for three weekends in a row, solidifying its place as a family favorite.

Following Doraemon, is Wicked: The Two Witches, holding strong in second place with impressive figures. This adaptation of the hit Broadway musical has drawn an audience of over 163,000 moviegoers and generated approximately 271 million yen in revenue during the weekend. Since its release, the cumulative total has surpassed 1.13 million viewers, raking in an astounding 1.8 billion yen in total revenue.

In an exciting turn, Disney's live-action adaptation of Snow White made its debut in third place. Released on March 20, 2025, this reimagined version of the classic fairy tale garnered 131,000 viewers and an impressive 197 million yen during its opening weekend. With the film's enchanting visuals and storytelling led by director Mark Webb, and featuring Rachel Zegler as the pure-hearted Snow White and Gal Gadot as the menacing queen, the film has already attracted an overall total of 4-day attendance reaching 218,000 people and has grossed 326 million yen.

Ranked fourth is The Boy and the Dog, another new release portraying the relationship between a young man and a dog in the aftermath of natural disaster. Adapted from the Naoki Prize-winning novel by Shion Miura, this touching film features Fumiyo Kohinata and Nana Seino in leading roles. Over the weekend, it recorded 83,000 attendees and revenue of approximately 109 million yen, bringing its total to 126,000 viewers and 164 million yen since its release.

Another noteworthy newcomer is Pope John Paul II, which secured the seventh position in the rankings. The film, which has been noted for its intriguing narrative surrounding the Vatican and the cardinals during the papal elections, showcases an intense power struggle among the clergy. The film features notable actors like Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and John Lynch and is directed by Edward Berger.

Ninth on the list is the film Goddess Advent: Before High School Debut Arc, a love comedy inspired by a prominent Korean web manga. The film stars Koki and explores the journey of a girl overcoming bullying through the transformative power of makeup. It offers a glimpse into the life of a young high school student who embarks on an exciting journey to find love and acceptance, highlighting themes of resilience and self-discovery.

The current top ten films from March 21-23, 2025, include: Doraemon the Movie: Nobita's Picture Book World Story, Wicked: The Two Witches, Snow White, The Boy and the Dog, 35-Year Love Letter, First Kiss 1ST KISS, Pope John Paul II, The Girl and the Dog, Goddess Advent: Before High School Debut Arc, and Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle.

As the cinematic landscape continues to evolve, new films such as Better Man, Mickey 17, Emilia Perez, My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, and Eiga Kikanjuu Thomas Bokuno Taisetsuna Monogatachi are set to make their premiere in the upcoming weeks, promising to keep audiences engaged and entertained.
