Death in Paradise is set to introduce a new detective to the sandy shores of Saint Marie, and fans are eager to learn more about actor Don Gilet. Death in Paradise season 14 is on its way, with a Christmas special scheduled for Sunday, December 22, on BBC One, marking the introduction of DI Mervin Wilson, portrayed by Don Gilet. With the festive episode soon to premiere, fans are curious to explore the off-screen life of the 57-year-old actor.
Born in January 1967 in Walsall, West Midlands, Gilet was raised in Caldmore alongside his parents and sister but now calls London home. Gilet's first onscreen role dates back to 1993, when he appeared in the sitcom Desmond's. Following this, he showcased his talent across various shows such as Demob, Brothers and Sisters, Casualty, and Cutting It. His first significant role came in 2001, when he starred as Johnny Lindo in the show Babyfather, working alongside his future EastEnders co-star Diane Parish.
Prior to reuniting with Parish, Gilet played DS Nicky Cole in 55 Degrees North and also featured prominently in Doctor Who, Meadowlands, and Holby City. Perhaps his most notable role to date has been as EastEnders' religious murderer Lucas Johnson, infamous for imprisoning his wife Denise Fox (Parish) under the guise of her being dead. Recently, Gilet made a brief return to EastEnders, during which Denise visited her ex-husband in prison, grappling with the events surrounding Keanu Taylor on Christmas Day 2023.
Now, Don Gilet is set to take over from Ralf Little as the new detective on Death in Paradise, following Little's exit from the show earlier this year. To fully immerse himself in his new role, the actor has implemented strict personal guidelines, including not swimming in the stunning waters of Guadeloupe, where Death in Paradise is set. He has even prevented his father, sister, and adult son from visiting him on the island, emphasizing his desire to focus on learning his lines. "You know it inside out," he stated, expressing his commitment to living up to the showrunners' expectations.
Reflecting on his new role, Gilet shared his long-standing admiration for the series. “I was drawn in by how they managed to balance the seriousness and gravity of a crime show – because there are murders! – with the quirkiness from the character’s perspective,” he explained. He watched Death in Paradise even before his first appearance some nine years ago, and has always felt the show’s unique blend of detective work and humor was magnetic.
On his casting, Gilet mentioned feeling both relieved and anxious, saying it was reminiscent of entering a thrilling theme park ride: “I’m going on it, and I know it’s going to be scary, but I’m going to do it. You’re daring yourself.” His anticipation has only fueled his dedication; he has gone as far as to distance himself from distractions, opting for focused preparations rather than seaside leisure.
Adding to his remarkable career, Gilet will be the first black lead detective on Death in Paradise, and he has spoken about the significance of his role amid previous criticisms of the show. “There are superficial ways one can be described and defined,” he said, indicating the importance of representation and authenticity within the series.
With the Christmas special set to highlight his debut as DI Mervin Wilson, expectations are high from both the showrunners and fans alike. The episode will see him addressing the chaos left behind by his predecessor, working to solve a perplexing triple shooting on the tranquil island.
Don Gilet’s dedication to the role, his rich acting history, and his reflections on the importance of representation create great anticipation for his new character. Viewers will not want to miss Gilet’s blend of drama and lightheartedness when Death in Paradise returns for its holiday special on December 22 at 8.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
