Dolphins Fall To Packers Ending Winning Streak

Another tough outing for Miami as cold weather and penalties derail their Thanksgiving hopes

The Miami Dolphins’ Thanksgiving night encounter against the Green Bay Packers turned out to be more of the same for the struggling franchise, culminating in a disappointing 30-17 loss. Hopes were high as the Dolphins entered the contest on the back of a three-game winning streak, yet their inability to overcome harsh weather and potent opposition poured cold water on those aspirations.

The match took place at Lambeau Field, notorious for its frigid conditions. The temperature dropped to 27 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind chills making it feel even colder. Despite these harsh conditions, the Dolphins couldn’t point to the weather as the sole reason for their defeat, even though linebacker Jordyn Brooks suggested, "I feel like we let the elements control the way we played. I thought we were soft. Simple asthat." His words encapsulated the frustration echoing through the locker room post-match.

Before the game began, the Dolphins aimed to dismantle narratives surrounding their performance against more resilient teams and their struggles under less than favorable weather. After all, they had not won any of their last 12 encounters where the kickoff temperature fell below 40 degrees. Still, failing to see their ambitions materialize felt all too familiar.

The night began with chaos for Miami, as rookie Malik Washington fumbled the opening punt. This blunder set the tone early on, allowing the Packers to score within minutes, putting the Dolphins on the back foot. Coach Mike McDaniel acknowledged this lapse and said, “Self-inflicted wounds undid Miami early.” The very first series of the match forced Miami to falter as they compounded their woes with three penalties on their opening drive, causing them to relinquish potential momentum.

From the outset, the Dolphins found themselves down by two touchdowns before Tua Tagovailoa could even break a sweat. The Packers used this momentum to take control of the game, and by halftime, Miami faced the painful reality of being 21 points adrift.

Yet, Tagovailoa showed resilience, finishing the game with impressive passing stats. He managed to throw for 365 yards and two touchdowns, reflecting some bright spots amid the gloom. Nevertheless, the offensive cohesion exhibited during their winning stretch seemed absent. He reflected post-game, stating, "The things we progressed on, we somewhat ended up digressing within the first half. Pre-snap penalties, things we thought we were getting improved at. Outside of the pre-snap penalties, just the operation wasn’t our style of football."

Commitment to the run game had been evident during their previous matches, with the Dolphins often rushing over 100 yards. But this time around, their efforts fell flat, managing only 39 yards, averaging 2.8 yards per carry. This inability to generate offense from their running backs cast doubt on their strategy moving forward. The Dolphins’ struggles were plain to see, especially with their ground game stifled and their commitment to establishing balance nullified.

To reinforce their current efforts, Miami faced another hurdle, losing significant members of their defensive secondary due to injuries during the match. This left them vulnerable against the Packers, and any hope of improving their chances vanished as the game progressed.

With only one victory against teams with winning records this season—and several losses against similarly situated teams—Miami's record looked increasingly concerning. The defeat against the Packers marked another chapter of disappointment, with McDaniel himself aware of the prevailing narrative surrounding his team. He admitted, "There’s one way to change them, the naysayers, you prove them right, they’ll be louder. That’s part of the territory. You carrythat until you do something about it, and unfortunately, we didn’t tonight."

Compounding the Dolphins’ struggles were penalties with the team racking up ten throughout the night. Coach McDaniel lamented, "That’s another microcosm of the issue. You know, we can’t expect to have the results of the previous games and take a gigantic step back." The relationship between the players’ discipline and their performance became painfully evident over the course of the match.

Despite their record against winning teams—where they now stand at 0-4 this season—the Dolphins still have glimpses of potential to build upon. Tagovailoa's ability to produce even under rushing pressure remains noteworthy, and clutch performances by players like Tyreek Hill, who caught six of nine targets for 83 yards, highlight the offensive capabilities when firing on all cylinders.

Yet, with each loss, the stakes grow higher as Miami finds themselves two games behind Denver for the AFC’s final Wild Card spot. The upcoming match against the New York Jets presents a significant opportunity for redemption, but only if they can forcefully address their limitations and avoid falling back amid adversity.

Looking past their immediate struggles, observers will undoubtedly be watching how the Dolphins navigate their last stretch of the season and whether they can shift the narrative before the playoffs loom on the horizon. With the season hanging delicately on the balance, it's clear the Dolphins must rise to the occasion if they're to avoid yet another disappointing conclusion.
