Documentary "Forever We Are Young" Premieres At SXSW

A film exploring the BTS ARMY’s impact on culture and social justice debuts at the festival.

The BTS ARMY have something to look forward to before the global pop group’s return as a full unit this June. "Forever We Are Young," a documentary chronicling the ARMY’s passion and dedication, made its world premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival at the Paramount Theater in Austin, Texas, on March 10. Directed by fans Grace Lee and Patty Ahn, the documentary explores the diverse BTS fan base from its early beginnings to its current zeitgeist-changing identity.

Grace Lee, one of the directors, shared her personal connection to the group, stating she became an ARMY during her time living in Japan as BTS’s influence surged. Her unique perspective as someone whose parents were Korean immigrants helped her reflect deeply on cultural identity. "[My mom] had to speak Japanese. So, it was so crazy to see Japan, and basically the rest of Asia, being colonized by Korean culture," Lee emphasized, highlighting the often-overlooked cultural exchanges occurring between nations.

Co-director Patty Ahn, who is also a professor specializing in K-pop, was introduced to BTS through their impactful song, "Spring Day." This song, which reflects on the tragic Sewol Ferry Tragedy of 2014, carries significant emotional weight for the group’s followers. Ahn explained the importance of this connection: "There is something unique about ARMY and their commitment to social justice issues […] But because BTS’s message in their music is about social justice, caring for each other, mutual respect, [and] loving ourselves, it inspires a peculiar kind of culture of care." This ethos has propelled fans toward collective activism—a noteworthy aspect portrayed throughout the documentary.

While the documentary serves to showcase the warm, dedicated community of the ARMY, it also sheds light on their broader cultural impact. Rather than merely being seen as enthusiasts for their favorite idols, ARMY members are characterized as passionate activists striving to effect positive change. Their advocacy ranges from mental health awareness to addressing social injustices, showcasing how music can unify voices for important causes.

The timing of the documentary’s premiere adds even more excitement for fans, following the recent announcement of two new BTS projects: "7 Moments" and "RUN BTS POLY HIGHLIGHT PACKAGE." These releases are anticipated to keep the ARMY engaged as they wait for the full group’s return.

Despite the fanfare surrounding the documentary, there is currently no official date set for its wider release. This uncertainty leaves fans eagerly anticipating when they might experience the film outside of the festival circuit.

Overall, "Forever We Are Young" encapsulates not only the phenomenon of BTS and its immense fanbase but also connects their musical themes to real-world issues. Both Lee and Ahn’s insights contribute to this layered narrative, illustrating how ARMY members are more than just followers; they are part of a movement aimed at fostering empathy and promoting social justice.
