Doctor Accused Of Murder Plot Using Fake Covid Jab

Thomas Kwan faces trial for allegedly attempting to poison his mother’s partner amid inheritance dispute

A chilling tale has emerged from Newcastle, where Thomas Kwan, a 53-year-old general practitioner from Sunderland, has been implicated in what prosecutors are calling the audacious attempt to murder his mother’s long-term partner, Patrick O’Hara. The court proceedings reveal how Kwan, described as a respected medical professional, donned disguises to pose as a community nurse and allegedly administered what he claimed was a COVID booster jab, but was actually tainted with poison.

The events unfolded on January 22 when Kwan arrived at his mother's home under the pretense of providing medical care to O’Hara, who was 71 at the time. Tension heightened between Kwan and his mother, Wai King, affectionately known as Jenny Leung, over her decision to bequeath her property to O'Hara, complicatind Kwan’s anticipated inheritance. Prosecutor Peter Makepeace KC highlighted the motive rooted deeply within this familial conflict, stating, "Sometimes, occasionally perhaps, the truth really is stranger than fiction. The case you are about to try is extraordinary."

Evidence presented at Newcastle Crown Court disclosed Kwan's elaborate design to eliminate O’Hara. He had reportedly faked communications from the NHS, crafting letters to O'Hara under the guise of 'Raj Patel', supposedly inviting him for the vaccine. Armed with this deception, Kwan was captured on CCTV checking himself in at a Premier Inn. Tactics included wearing gloves, tinted glasses, and even utilizing a mask to conceal his identity.

Once Kwan reached his mother’s house, he proceeded to conduct what appeared to be normal medical procedures, taking blood and urine samples from O'Hara. It was during this session he claimed the older man needed additional vaccinations, notwithstanding O’Hara's earlier vaccination just three months prior. The court heard how O'Hara, taken unaware, felt immediate and excruciated pain after the injection. Despite Kwan's hurried reassurances, advising him not to worry, O’Hara quickly recognized something was gravely amiss.

Post-injection, as the reality of the situation set in, O’Hara needed urgent medical attention. Within moments, he experienced severe complications and was later diagnosed with necrotising fasciitis—a rare and life-threatening infection commonly referred to as flesh-eater disease. Emergency surgery followed, removing significant damaged tissue from his arm, and his survival hinged upon swift medical intervention.

Further investigations unveiled more shocking elements. Police discovered Kwan possessing not just the fake ID associated with his alter ego, but also images of him dressed with wigs, fake beards, and mustaches intended to assist him if D'O'Hara ever requested identity confirmation. The extensive planning, which prosecutors argue suggested premeditated intent to kill, involved Kwan surveilling his mother’s communications through spyware. This tactic not only indicated his motives but painted the picture of a man desperate for financial gain.

Following Kwan’s initial admission to administering what the court termed as "noxious substances," he vehemently denied the more severe accusations of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm with intent. His legal team seems poised to challenge the extent of his intentions, arguing he did not set out to inflict severe harm.

The chilling courtroom drama continues as details of Kwan's strained family dynamics and the avarice aspects intermingle, painting the portrait of not just medical betrayal, but familial treachery. With prosecutorial claims portraying Kwan as having carefully orchestrated this poisoning with knowledge and skill, the jury faces the difficult task of untangling the themes of respectability and malevolence inherent within Kwan's life as both doctor and son.

By the end of the proceedings, the verdict of Thomas Kwan will not only determine the fate of one man but also lay bare the deeply dysfunctional ties of family, inheritance, and the morality of those we trust with our health—an ever-dominant question ringing loud since the genesis of this pandemic-utilizing plot. The trial remains active, capturing the attention and concern of the public as it explores the darkest corners of human relationships set against the backdrop of trust placed within the medical community.
