Disney’s New Snow White Trailer Sparks Mixed Reactions

Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot star as the iconic princess and evil queen, setting the stage for controversy and excitement

Disney is marking its return to classic fairy tales with its upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White, featuring Rachel Zegler as the iconic princess and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The story promises to provide fans with nostalgia and modern flair, aimed at capturing the hearts of both new and old audiences. The project is set to hit theaters on March 21, 2025, and recently brought excitement to fans when the first teaser trailer was unveiled at the D23 Expo.

The trailer introduces viewers to Snow White, singing the classic tune "Whistle While You Work" alongside the seven dwarfs. Gadot’s portrayal as the Evil Queen is showcased, stirring excitement as she questions her beauty before her famed magic mirror. Set against the backdrop of enhanced visuals and stunning cinematography, the film is directed by Marc Webb, known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man, and features original songs written by the acclaimed duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who brought us hits from Dear Evan Hansen and The Greatest Showman.

The teaser, which lasts just over one minute, offers glimpses of the much-beloved characters from the original story crafted by the Brothers Grimm. It's worth noting the film takes significant steps away from the traditional narrative structure, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in fresh adaptations of well-known moments.

Although the trailer has been largely anticipated, it has not been devoid of controversy. Many fans have expressed mixed reactions to the adaptation, particularly concerning the casting choices and modifications to character roles. Zegler, who made waves with her prior performance in West Side Story, has faced scrutiny not only for taking the lead role but also for being portrayed as Snow White, with some critics feeling her physical appearance doesn't match the character's historical depiction.

A portion of social media backlash has centered around comments from star Peter Dinklage, who previously criticized Disney for its treatment of the seven dwarfs, expressing concern over the portrayal of little people within the storyline. Following Dinklage's remarks, Disney stated its intention to approach the story differently, leading to rumors about substantial changes to the dwarf characters. Reports suggest the dwarfs will be created using CGI, adding another layer of discontent among fans who feel this erases opportunities for little person actors.

The spirited debates online highlight the challenge of reimagining beloved classics. Some fans, nostalgic for the original 1937 animated film, argue against the portrayal of familiar characters and stories taking new directions. One viewer shared on social media, “Disney... as someone who grew up in your golden age of film, I want you to know there are books being written right now, using you and these films as cautionary tales of what NOT to do.”

Many supporters, on the other hand, are excited by the idea of modernizing the narrative, feeling it can empower future generations: Zegler has joyfully spoken of the privilege of embodying such a beloved character and hopes her portrayal will encourage young girls to see themselves as capable and adventurous leaders rather than passive characters waiting for rescue. Gadot echoes this sentiment, emphasizing Snow White's evolution from merely seeking love to actively pursuing her own path and leadership.

Screenwriter Greta Gerwig has highlighted how the film will discard the idea of Snow White depending on her prince for happiness, instead presenting her as the architect of her destiny. Quotes like Zegler’s declaring, “She’s not going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be,” resonate with fans eager for empowering storylines.

Yet, as the discussion heats up, the public's focus isn't solely on the casting and character development. Many are questioning if this elevates the story or detracts from the traditional charm audiences have cherished. Comparisons of the new Snow White to the old have sparked some heated dialogues about beauty standards and the expectations tied to iconic fairy-tale narratives.

Critics of the adaptation argue vocalized fears skew the notion of Snow White as progressive, insisting it attempts to box modern feminism within the confines of familiar gender roles. One social media commenter expressed concern about the adaptation, stating, “The original story was iconic; why change it?”

Meanwhile, the enchanting visuals and songs featured within the Snow White teaser have generated intrigue, leading curious audiences to ponder what this colorful revival may bring. While some are filled with excitement about new cinematic endeavors, others remain skeptical, hesitant to embrace widespread changes made to the hallmark narrative.

Eager to discover how these changes affect the essence of the Snow White tale, fans await the film's release with bated breath. The engagement online continues to highlight the complexity of revisiting timeless stories and the aspirations they may hold for modern audiences.
