Walt Disney World has announced its refurbishment schedule for 2024 and 2025, detailing several ride closures and enhancements across its expansive resort. For visitors planning trips to the popular destination, the timing of these refurbishments could significantly affect their experiences.
One of the most notable closures is the beloved Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which shut down on January 5, 2025, for renovations and is not expected to reopen until 2026. The roller coaster has been known for its long wait times, often peaking well over 70 minutes on busy days, and this extended closure will surely leave many guests disappointed.
Other significant ride closures at the Magic Kingdom include the Astro Orbiter, which is scheduled to close from January 13 through summer 2025, and the Hall of Presidents, which will close starting January 20, 2025. This typical refurbishment aims to update the attraction with the latest president when it reopens at an undetermined date.
Over at Disney's Hollywood Studios, guests will see major changes as well. The recently announced Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure will open its doors to guests by summer 2025, replacing the existing Voyage of the Little Mermaid. Meanwhile, the Muppets Courtyard will permanently close to make way for the upcoming Monsters, Inc. land, with construction set to begin at yet-to-be-announced dates.
Disney's Animal Kingdom is also not without its closures. The Kali River Rapids ride is set to close indefinitely starting January 6, 2025, for maintenance, and the TriceraTop Spin and related attractions will also close on January 13, 2025, as part of construction efforts for new experiences.
Another anticipated opening is Disney Villains Show, coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios summer 2025, replacing the now-permanently closed Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy.
Meanwhile, EPCOT will see the Test Track undergoing refurbishment starting June 17, 2024, when it will close to receive significant updates slated for late summer 2025. The Gran Fiesta Tour will also pause for upgrading from January 6 to March 15, 2025.
This refurbishment season is also affecting accommodations, with Disney resorts undergoing renovations at several locations. Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort will see its Fantasia Pool closed from January to April 2025, and at Disney's Beach Club Resort & Villas, the Stormalong Bay and Shipwreck Pool will be shut down from January to June 2025.
While these refurbishments may cause inconvenience, they are indicative of Disney's commitment to maintaining and enhancing the guest experience. Many popular attractions, such as the new Pirates of the Caribbean tavern expected to open by late 2025 and the new nighttime parade titled Disney Starlight, are set to enrich the parks during their downtime.
Disney World encompasses over 27,000 acres and features numerous attractions. It’s common for facilities to require maintenance, but these closures can affect crowds and guests' overall experiences. For those who regularly visit the parks, keeping track of refurbishment schedules can help avoid disappointments.
While there may be closures, Disney is always innovatively regrowing and reshaping its experiences. Both returning and new guests are encouraged to check the official Walt Disney World website for up-to-date information on attraction status, including closures and new openings, ensuring they can make the most out of their visit.
