Disney Pixar Announces Production Of Coco 2

The sequel to the beloved animated film is set to reunite its original creative team and aims for a 2029 release.

Disney and Pixar are set to bring back the vibrant world of the animated film Coco with an eagerly anticipated sequel. During the annual shareholders meeting held on March 20, 2025, Bob Iger, the CEO of The Walt Disney Company, announced that Coco 2 is currently in the early stages of development. This announcement has ignited excitement among fans of the original film, which won two Academy Awards: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Remember Me.”

Bob Iger stated, “Although the film is only in its early stages, we know it will be filled with humor, heart, and adventure. We can’t wait to share more soon.” The sequel will see the return of the original creative team, including Oscar-winning director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, who have both played pivotal roles in shaping the unique narrative and aesthetic of the original film.

The original Coco, released in 2017, captured audiences worldwide with its poignant exploration of Mexican culture and the celebration of Día de Muertos. Its heartfelt story follows Miguel, a 12-year-old boy who aspires to become a musician despite his family's longstanding ban on music. His journey takes him to the Land of the Dead, where he unearths family secrets and the power of remembrance.

Mark Nielsen, an esteemed producer known for his work on films such as Toy Story 4 and Inside Out, is set to produce Coco 2. Although specific plot details have yet to be revealed, the film is expected to maintain the same balance of humor and emotional depth that characterized its predecessor.

Since its release, the original Coco has not only amassed critical acclaim, winning major awards like the Golden Globe and BAFTA for Best Animated Feature, but also achieved significant commercial success, grossing approximately $817 million worldwide. Its artistic portrayal and emotionally resonant messages resonate with audiences, making it a beloved Disney-Pixar staple.

The sequel is tentatively scheduled for release in 2029, with the timeline allowing the creative team to develop a compelling story that can stand alongside its predecessor. This extended timeframe is likely to heighten anticipation among fans who fondly remember Miguel’s adventures and the rich cultural tapestry presented in the first film.

Alongside the excitement surrounding Coco 2, Disney and Pixar are also poised to unleash a series of sequels and new projects in the coming years. Among them are The Incredibles 3, Toy Story 5, and a possible Cars 4, as well as Encanto 2, which continues the story of the Madrigal family from the enchanting world of Encanto.

The anticipation for Coco 2 reflects not only the film's initial impact but also the lasting affection fans have for its characters and themes. With the original film's message about family, dreams, and the importance of remembering those we love, expectations run high for the sequel to build upon an already cherished legacy.
