The emergence of Lagos as one of Africa's premier tourist destinations is set to receive a dramatic boost with the upcoming six-part documentary titled ‘Discover Lagos.’ This initiative, led by Teju Ajayi, aims to showcase the city's vibrant culture, rich history, and exciting attractions, positioning Lagos as not just Nigeria's commercial nerve center, but also as a must-visit location for tourists worldwide.
Ajayi, known for the Discover Lagos initiative, recently unveiled the documentary project during an interview with ROTIMI IGE, sharing insights about its primary goals and the long road leading to its realization. Launched nearly one year ago, the project was delayed to refine its presentation and inclusivity of the city's varying attractions.
The central aim of Discover Lagos is to serve as a powerful platform showcasing the diverse experiences available within the city. “The objective of Discover Lagos is to serve as a platform to showcase the city’s vibrant culture, rich history, and exciting attractions, promoting tourism and attracting visitors from around the world,” said Ajayi. This initiative not only seeks to reel in international tourists but also aims to inform locals and diasporans about all the developments and attractions Lagos has to offer.
Interestingly, the initiative seeks to highlight advancements such as the introduction of the Lagos Metro Lines and innovative payment solutions like the cowry card, similar to London’s Oyster card. Ajayi emphasized, “Whether you’re coming for ‘Detty December,’ summer, or any other holiday, Discover Lagos offers a preview of the vibrant experiences.” The documentary promises to capture the complete essence of Lagos, which spans historical landmarks, natural wonders, and the city's lively nightlife.
Among the key attractions highlighted are cultural sites, serene lagoons, pristine beaches, and vibrant entertainment hubs. With active promotions for water tourism and nightlife experiences, Discover Lagos plans to update content regularly to reflect new developments and upcoming attractions. “From serene lagoons to pristine beaches, Lagos offers...” Ajayi remarked, showcasing the beckoning tourism nature of the region.
Ajayi is particularly proud of the initiative's evolution since its inception. “Since its inception, Discover Lagos has evolved significantly, and I’m most proud of how we’ve been able to tour different parts of the world,” he stated. The initiative has garnered international attention, receiving support from the Lagos State Tourism Ministry, especially during events like the ‘Greater Lagos’ countdown.
The response from both residents and international tourists has been overwhelmingly positive. Ajayi noted, “One of the feedbacks we are particularly proud of... When we shared our vision... their responses have been overwhelming.” This reception has encouraged local businesses—restaurants, hotels, arts, and cultural events—to engage with the initiative, effectively creating a ripple effect within the local economy.
There's potential for significant economic impact as well. Ajayi elaborated, “The economic impact of this initiative on local businesses, hospitality, and tourism is significant.” The increased visitation is expected to boost patronage across various sectors, enhancing revenue for local businesses and drawing new investments. An uptick in tourism will lead to evidenced job creation, as businesses, boosted by tourism, will require more staff, thereby aiding the local economy.
Of course, no initiative sails through without challenges. Ajayi observed, “The challenges we face are both global and local… A major concern is security,” highlighting the reservations tourists express about safety. The initiative is actively addressing these concerns to manage perceptions. Environmental issues, funding constraints, and limited awareness of Lagos's vast attractions emerged as hurdles needing mitigation strategies.
Nevertheless, Ajayi and his team remain optimistic and determined. “We are committed to making this project a success,” he shared, emphasizing their focus on solutions rather than difficulties. The ultimate goal of Discover Lagos is to change misconceptions surrounding the city, elevatin its status globally. “Through this initiative, we aim to dispel negative stereotypes,” Ajayi conveyed, adding layers of credibility and promise to the project.
With plans to penetrate international visibility, the documentary is poised to recast Lagos's image, moving beyond local recognition to attract global travelers. “We will definitely raise the city’s global profile,” Ajayi affirmed, backing up the contours of what should be expected from Lagos as it embraces its newfound role as a vibrant tourist destination.
