The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is making strides toward becoming the world’s first AI-native utility, a move that aligns with the UAE's ambitions for leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainable development. This ambitious initiative was unveiled by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, during the recent GenAI Week, an event dedicated to exploring AI's future applications within the organization.
Held from March 26 to March 29, 2025, at DEWA’s headquarters, GenAI Week brought together experts and representatives from leading AI companies, including Microsoft, IBM, ServiceNow, and DataRobot. The event featured workshops, panel discussions, and interactive lectures on topics such as deep learning, AI neural networks, and automation, all aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of AI's transformative potential.
Al Tayer emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, "In line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, for the UAE to be a global leader in AI adoption to accelerate government progress, we are pleased to launch our strategic roadmap to becoming the world’s first AI-native utility." He noted that the integration of AI technologies across DEWA's operations is designed to enhance productivity, streamline decision-making, and foster innovation.
DEWA's commitment to AI is part of a broader strategy that aligns with the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031. This strategy aims to position the UAE as a global leader in AI by investing in its workforce and key industries. Meanwhile, DEWA is also engaged in collaborative discussions with the Republic of Indonesia to explore new avenues for partnership in clean energy and water sustainability. During a recent meeting between Al Tayer and HE Husin Bagis, Indonesia's Ambassador to the UAE, both parties emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships and the exchange of expertise in advancing sustainable development.
Al Tayer highlighted DEWA’s achievements in decarbonization and greenhouse gas reduction, reaffirming the organization's commitment to the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. The centerpiece of these efforts is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, recognized as the world’s largest single-site solar park.
Ambassador Bagis expressed Indonesia’s interest in collaborating with DEWA to enhance access to clean and affordable water in Indonesia, particularly in remote and arid regions where water scarcity is a pressing challenge. He noted that DEWA’s expertise in water desalination and sustainable water management could serve as a valuable model for similar initiatives in Indonesia.
