Devi Sukarno, known as "Devi Fujin," has been referred to prosecutors on suspicion of assault after allegedly throwing a glass at a female employee of her office during a meal in Tokyo. The incident occurred in February 2025 at a restaurant in Shibuya Ward, where the 85-year-old talent reportedly became embroiled in a dispute over future activities with the employee.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the incident took place during a farewell party attended by about six people, including office staff. During the argument, which revolved around political and entertainment activities, Devi Sukarno allegedly threw a champagne glass at the woman. Fortunately, the employee was not injured in the altercation.
On April 16, 2025, the police confirmed that Sukarno had been formally referred for prosecution. Despite the allegations, she has denied throwing any glasses, stating, "I didn't throw any glasses." This denial is consistent with her previous responses to allegations of violence.
Devi Sukarno's history includes a notable incident in 1992 when she was arrested for allegedly hitting Minnie Osmeña, the granddaughter of a former Philippine president, with a champagne glass at a party in Aspen, Colorado. This incident resulted in a severe injury requiring 37 stitches. Sukarno was sentenced to 60 days in jail and fined $750, serving 34 days behind bars. In her memoir, she claimed she acted out of humiliation but maintained that she did not intend to harm Osmeña.
In addition to her controversial past, Devi Sukarno has been involved in various incidents of alleged violence. In 2009, after moving to Japan, she threw a flower pot from her second-floor balcony at a right-wing protest vehicle outside her home in Shibuya, which was responding to her comments about North Korea's missile launches. More recently, during a TBS program recording, she slapped a woman three times after being provoked, although the complaint was later withdrawn after a settlement.
As she faces these legal challenges, Sukarno is actively pursuing a political career. She has announced her intention to run in the upcoming summer House of Councillors election as a proportional representation candidate for the "12 Peace Party," which she leads. This political group focuses on animal welfare issues, advocating for the prohibition of dog and cat consumption and aiming for zero euthanasia of pets.
Despite the ongoing investigation into her alleged assault, Sukarno is scheduled to participate in a study session on animal welfare at the House of Councillors No. 1 Members' Office Building on April 18, 2025. Her dual focus on political ambitions and personal controversies continues to draw public attention.
The incident has sparked discussions about the behavior of public figures and their accountability, particularly in the context of their professional conduct. As Sukarno navigates her legal troubles, her supporters and critics alike are watching closely to see how this situation unfolds.
