Deventer is getting ready for one of its biggest events of the year: the Dickens Festijn. This annual festival, known for transforming the Bergkwartier area of Deventer, will take place on December 14 and 15, 2024, and is expected to draw over 100,000 visitors from both the Netherlands and abroad. It’s the 32nd edition of this captivating event, where the timeless stories and characters of Charles Dickens come to life, featuring over 950 actors dressed in Victorian attire.
Traditionally, entry to the Dickens Festijn has been free, but recent statements from Martijn Westerbrink, director of the organizing body Stichting dEVENTer, suggest this might be the last year to enjoy the festival without charge. "But to be sure the costs can be offset by income, we will also need to raise money upfront for the event," Westerbrink remarked, hinting at the possibility of introducing ticket prices starting next year. He anticipates ticket costs to fall between five and six euros.
The festival encapsulates the festive spirit of Victorian London, with streets adorned with Christmas lights and large trees. Alongside historical reenactments, visitors can expect live entertainment, including charades and musical performances, enhancing the festive atmosphere. Not only do the visual spectacles abound, with charming decorations and historical settings, but they also provide everyone present with the unique experience of stepping back two centuries.
Every year, the organizing team aims to keep the festival fresh by adding new attractions, ensuring returning visitors discover something new. "We may not change the set, but we constantly strive to introduce new elements to the program," Westerbrink shared, expressing his commitment to keeping the experience dynamic.
This year, visitors are invited to engage with historical figures, with even Charles Dickens himself making appearances to welcome attendees as they queue for admission. Long queues are expected, especially with peak attendance anticipated; last year saw waits of up to 2.5 hours. The Deventer railway service will run additional trains to accommodate the crowd, allowing for easy access to the festival.
Accessibility seems to be particularly on the mind of the organizers, who have enlisted volunteers to accommodate attendees with physical disabilities. Westerbrink noted, "Last year we did a baseline study to see how accessible public events are in Deventer to work on improvements. One major point was ensuring those with disabilities know whom to approach with their questions about accessibility." To address this concern, volunteers donning recognizable white jackets with wheelchair logos will actively assist attendees with mobility challenges.
The festival isn't merely about enjoyment; it also aims to raise awareness of social issues reflective of Dickens' writing. Attendees will witness performances depicting struggles faced during the Victorian era, including protests against health concerns and exploitation. This year, visitors will be invited to donate at the exit, where they might find themselves facing makeshift toll booths reminiscent of London’s historic practices. "It is not compulsory to contribute, but we hope visitors understand the importance of financial support to maintain such events," said Westerbrink. It’s intended both to inform guests of the funding needed for future events and to prepare them for the potential implementation of ticket sales next year.
Local business owners like Eline Jansen from ‘Lekkers bij Jansen’ are equally excited and prepared for the influx of visitors. Her store, along with others, has been specially decorated to fit the Dickens theme, featuring products from Deventer showcased prominently. "We are completely ready for it!" she exclaimed, emphasizing the community effort to create festive cheer.
The atmosphere of the Dickens Festijn encapsulates the holiday season, drawing together friends and families to experience the spirits of yuletide past. Visitors can enjoy traditional food, lively music, and theatrical performances throughout the event, making every aspect of the festival enjoyable for all ages.
Mark your calendars for this year's Dickens Festijn on December 14 and 15, as Deventer welcomes you to partake in what could be the last year to experience the festival for free. By participating, not only do attendees indulge in festive enjoyment, but they also contribute to the future sustainability of this cherished event.
