Deutsche Telekom is making significant strides to improve mobile network coverage across various regions of Germany, including Celle, Düren, and the Schwalm-Eder-Kreis. The telecommunication giant has recently announced new construction and expansions of mobile sites aimed at eradicasting existing service gaps, colloquially known as "white spots." This ambitious plan will not only bolster connectivity but also address the increasing demand for higher bandwidth.
According to Telekom's spokesperson, Stefanie Halle, three new sites were built over the last two months the Landkreis Celle area. This expansion enhances coverage not only across the county but also improves reception within buildings, which is often a concern for many residents. "The mobile coverage is now nearly 100 percent within households, and we plan to add 18 more sites by 2026," Halle said, highlighting the commitment of Telekom to improve its service.
Telekom's initiatives to expand connectivity along transportation routes have also been notable. Specifically, service along the Hannover-Hamburg railway has been enhanced, which is beneficial for commuters and travelers. Currently, Telekom operates 77 mobile sites within the Landkreis Celle alone, indicating the scale of their investment and the breadth of their network.
Despite these advancements, the need for improvement remains, particularly for the provider O2 Telefónica, which lags behind its competitors. A recent survey reported by CZ noted no less than several locations lacking adequate 4G/LTE and 5G coverage, indicating potential gaps still exist. The findings were corroborated by measurements collected throughout the year by the Hamburg-based company ENQT, which identified several areas with even larger white spots than those displayed on providers' coverage maps. Consequently, ENQT suggests urgent discussions with service providers to rectify coverage inadequacies.
Turning to the Kreis Düren area, Telekom has similarly reported progress. On December 27, 2024, the company announced the completion of one new mobile site paired with an expansion of another to include 5G capabilities. The growth from this expansion brings the total number of sites to 112 across the Kreis, again boasting nearly complete household coverage. "The demand for bandwidth is increasing continually—around 30 percent every year. Hence, we are accelerating our mobile expansion efforts," stated Maik Exner, a spokesperson for Deutsche Telekom.
With the expansion project focusing on improving the reception along the Köln-Aachen railway, it is apparent Telekom is orienting their upgrades to meet real-world user demands. There are plans for an additional 13 sites to be developed by 2026, alongside 52 base stations marked for LTE or 5G upgrades. Collaborations with municipalities are fundamental to securing space for these developments.
This undertaking mirrors trends reported across regions, showcasing Telekom's broader commitment to elevaging Germany's mobile infrastructure.
Further advances have also been observed within the Schwalm-Eder-Kreis region. On the same day as the Düren announcement, Telekom revealed a newly constructed site aimed at bolstering service along the busy Autobahn A49. This move not only amplifies coverage within the area but also enhances infrastructure to meet the public's increasing appetite for mobile data.
Julia della Peruta, another spokesperson for Deutsche Telekom, reiterated the company's ambitions, stating, "The need for increased bandwidth grows, and we are committed to speeding up network expansion as quickly as possible." Currently, Telekom operates 76 sites within the Schwalm-Eder-Kreis and plans to add 39 more by 2026. Like the earlier reports, the expansion will also see enhancements made to existing sites in conjunction with local authorities.
Overall, these concerted efforts represent Telekom's proactive approach to bridging communication gaps within regions of Germany. With over 36,000 operational mobile sites and around 1,500 new locations being launched yearly, Deutsche Telekom is making headway against the challenges of insufficient connectivity.
