Deutsche Bahn Unveils New Schwerin Industriepark Train Station

Investment enhances public transport access for workers and promotes eco-friendly travel options.

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has officially opened the new Schwerin Industriepark train station, paving the way for improved public transportation access to one of the region's prominent industrial sites. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the start of the year and was marked by acknowledgments from various local and state officials who emphasized the importance of this infrastructure investment.

This new station, built with a considerable investment of approximately €1.9 million, aims to facilitate connectivity for commuters and business travelers alike. Since the recent timetable change, employees and visitors at Schwerin Industriepark can now conveniently access the station along the Rehna–Schwerin–Parchim route, with trains operating at stable hourly intervals. Ralf Thieme, board member of DB InfraGo, described it as "good news for the capital city," indicating it allows workers to leave their cars behind, as the train now stops almost at their workplace's gate.

Located within the heart of Schwerin, the station reflects modern design elements, including energy-efficient lighting and barrier-free access. Its construction encompasses significant infrastructure aimed at making travels more accessible. With the platform measuring 100 meters long and at a height of 55 centimeters, arrangements are made for seamless access to the trains, promoting the notion of public transport being at the forefront of travel choices.

At the inauguration, Schwerin's Mayor, Rico Badenschier, expressed his excitement over the station’s impact, noting, "This stop enables the connection of our industrial park on stable hourly schedules. Employees and business travelers can reach Schwerin’s city center within minutes. A frequency like this wouldn't be economically feasible with our bus services!" This sentiment reflects broader interests across the state to not merely improve rail service but to draw more individuals toward using public transportation routes.

Further affirming the station's significance, Manuela Schwesig, Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, remarked, "With the Schwerin Industriepark train station, we are enhancing the industrial park's connection to rail. It takes just 12 minutes from the main station to get here. I’m convinced we can transfer more traffic to the rails, provided we have the right package: good connections at competitive prices.” This assessment is indicative of the local government’s commitment to bolster sustainable travel by reducing dependency on cars.

The operationalization of the Schwerin Industriepark station marks just the beginning of what DB has laid out as its Station Offensive, which aims to improve public transport connections across various regions. According to Daniel Bischof from the VMV transport company, the new station vastly enhances accessibility for trains at the industrial park, significantly improving public transport options for employees.

While the inauguration is celebrated, plans are already underway for future improvements, including major renovation projects between Hamburg and Berlin scheduled from August 2025 until April 2026. Ralf Thieme disclosed to local media, "During the general renovation of the Hamburg-Berlin line, we will be renovating nine stations across Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, ensuring travelers will notice the 'before-and-after' differences." This renovation is anticipated to heighten service standards and provide modern amenities to commuters.

Additional investments by DB focus on revamping stations around Rostock, Altentreptow, and Sternfeld, with provisions being made for potential future high-speed connections. The DB has assured travelers of effective communication and functional substitute transport means during construction to minimize disruptions. Thieme mentioned the positive feedback received from passengers during prior similar renovations, showcasing the planning and commitment to maintaining service quality even amid construction.

DB's investments signify not just infrastructural upgrades but also the commitment to enhancing the public travel experience across key routes. This initiative reflects the growing acknowledgment of rail travel's role as both sustainable and efficient, catering to the needs of urban populations and businesses alike.

With these measures, Deutsche Bahn demonstrates both its responsiveness to commuter needs and its strategic goals aimed at making rail travel increasingly comfortable and accessible as part of the broader public transport network. The new Schwerin Industriepark station is symbolic of these aspirations and sets the stage for continued enhancements along notable routes throughout the region.
